Guglielmo Castelli’s painting expands into space and becomes an integral part of the scene. His fragile and suspended figures - bodies, fragments, and allusive presences - seem to emerge from and dissolve into the pictorial field. In this project, the images also recall the Baroque iconographic tradition of the fall of the giants: bodies that plunge, slip, and lose their balance, as if space itself were crossed by a continuous downward movement.

Sospeso nel moto con addebito di vuoto

Sospeso nel moto
con addebito di vuoto,
avanzo di niente,
Sostegno di poco.

In questa caduta di santi e giganti,
inermi dinanzi

FABIO CHERSTICH

L’Italiana in Algeri by Gioachino Rossini
2026

Fabio Cherstich directs Rossini’s comic masterpiece L’Italiana in Algeri. The production is conceived as a way to give physical, theatrical form to the irrepressible energy of the score - comic, overwhelming, explosive - built on accumulation, momentum, short circuits, rhythmic traps, and sudden detonations.

The stage becomes a machine on the verge of losing control, where the grotesque is not an aesthetic but a lens: the characters emerge as deliberately exaggerated, distorted, and stereotyped masks.

MASSIMO BARTOLINI
100 GIORNI

The church nave hosts an installation that embodies some of the most emblematic themes of Bartolini’s work: the tension between the visible and the invisible, the suspension between the real and the symbolic, the transformation of light into both matter and narrative.

At the entrance, a large unlit luminaria forms an architectural body composed of modular geometries. This marks the second time Bartolini has worked with Sicilian luminarie, here shown in a dormant state, deprived of light and reduced to an essential framework. These traditional lights from Southern Italy, typically used for religious and civic celebrations, become in this context a diaphanous space, suspended between promise and disillusionment, where the festivity seems frozen, perhaps already over, or perhaps yet to begin.

At the back of the altar, a red neon light turns on, illuminating and giving voice to two wall inscriptions discovered in the Cremona prison. While light is extinguished in the luminaria, here the word takes luminous form, revealing a private sign in a public way.

The exhibition unfolds as a double threshold, where the element of light is removed from the festive apparatus and returned to the voice of the isolated individual. What emerges is an unstable balance, playing on the contrasts between transparency and secrecy, freedom and constraint, vision and imagination.

-

The show will be open today from 3 pm to 8 pm and tomorrow, Sunday September 21st from 11 am to 7 pm

PAOLA PIVI
A HELICOPTER UPSIDE DOWN

On view at San Carlo Cremona from March the 1st until the end of June

Paola Pivi presents an Agusta 109 helicopter, flipped upside down and placed on the floor of the central nave of the church San Carlo. This positioning transforms an object known for its functionality and association with movement into an unexpected and disorienting presence. The inversion emphasizes the tension between the helicopter’s tangible materiality and its symbolic connection to flight, challenging visitors to reconsider their perceptions and interactions with familiar objects, which in this context take on a new and surprising dimension.

MONICA BONVICINI
“And Rose”

Opening tonight
6:30 - 8:30 pm

Monica Bonvicini’s site-specific installation in a deconsecrated church adds another step to the artist’s practice centered on the interaction between artwork, viewer and architecture. With imposing sculptures from the series “Chainswings” dominating the nave, Bonvicini continues her incisive exploration of the dynamics of power inherent in architectural spaces, bringing her investigation to new levels of complexity and resonance.

These performative sculptures, which oscillate between play and submission, are made with galvanized steel chains and embody a provocative synthesis of industrial aesthetics and sub-cultural allusions, challenging the expectations associated with both contemporary art ad sacred spaces.

The installation is critically inserted in the current debate about the role of art in public spaces and the participatory nature of artistic experience. By inviting visitors to physical interaction, Bonvicini subverts the traditional dynamic of passive contemplation, transforming the audience into an active co-creator of the work.

The choice of a deconsecrated church as an exhibition space amplifies the importance of the work, creating a tense dialogue between sacred and profane, institutional and subversive. This gesture not only highlights Bonvicini’s ability to respond eloquently to architectural spaces, but also raises crucial questions about the re-appropriation of public spaces and the fluidity of the boundaries between art, architecture and social criticism.

“And Rose” immerses itself in the central points of Bonvicini’s practice: feminism, sexuality, power and institutional criticism. However, in this context, these themes acquire new nuances, inviting a reflection on the persistence of power structures even in apparently desacralized spaces.

MONICA BONVICINI

“Stairway to Hell” is a work by Monica Bonvicini, created in 2023. This sculptural installation consists of a vertical metal staircase, evocative of a path that defies traditional conventions.

The work addresses complex issues such as power, vulnerability, and gender conflict, reflecting on architecture and its social impact. The staircase, a symbol of rise and fall, invites the viewer to consider the ambivalences of social and personal progression.

The use of industrial materials and the austere form create a striking contrast, urging the audience to reflect on their relationship with the surrounding environment and the nature of their aspirations.

JONAS MEKAS
Requiem

Opening tonight 6:30-8:30 pm
