Peter Obi has reiterated his call for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, saying there is no justification for his continued detention. Speaking during an interaction with Nigerians in Washington, D.C., Obi argued that Kanu should not be held for actions such as public statements or criticism, insisting that such issues are not criminal offences.
He said he would prefer dialogue and engagement in addressing separatist agitations if given the chance to lead, adding that open discussion would help resolve underlying grievances. Kanu, who was convicted on terrorism-related charges in November 2025 and sentenced to life imprisonment, is currently appealing the judgment, which his legal team has described as unfair.
