Atanas Ourkouzounov (1970) is a Bulgarian composer and guitarist. He began his studies in his native country and then moved to the Paris Conservatory where he studied guitar, chamber music, analysis, ethnomusicology and improvisation. He often performs in duo with flutist Mie Ogura, his wife, to whom he has dedicated much of his chamber music production.
4 Légendes is a four-movement composition inspired by the Balkan style, evident in the irregular rhythms, second and seventh dissonances, and also in the titles of the four movements. The first movement is entitled Kukeri, Bulgarian male costumes used in propitiatory rites, and employs irregular rhythms, continuous shifts of accent, and distinctive sound effects. This is followed by the slow, melancholy Makedonska Pesen (Macedonian melody), where the elegiac flute motif develops over a guitar ostinato. The third movement is dedicated to Hitar Petar, Naughty Peter, a folk hero, and is characterized by the expressive use of percussive and harmonic sounds. The composition concludes with Sabor, feast in Bulgarian, a piece with swirling energy that evokes a dancing and communal atmosphere
