I am pleased to announce that I have been selected as the German contribution to "New Worlds: Women to Watch" at the NATIONAL MUSEUM OF WOMEN IN THE ARTS (NMWA), WASHINGTON D.C..

The National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) presents 28 international women artists in this, the most comprehensive edition of the long-running exhibition series to date.

From the works of Giotto di Bondone (painted between 1295 and 1305) to Picasso's Guernica (1937), in his series "Espacios Ocultos" ("Concealed Spaces") Ballester erases all of the characters and signs of activity of classic paintings in order to focus the attention on the background, the stage where said life has ceased to exist.

The series, which started as a collaboration with Museo del Prado in Madrid that has since been extended to other museums, consists of digitally altered photographs of the original paintings, mimicking the style of the painter. The intervened works are then printed to the paintings' exact dimensions, and have often been placed side by side with the original in exhibitions. However, by choosing classical, instantly recognizable pieces, the works stand on their own as a collection of dehumanized void architectures and natural landscapes.

As Ballester himself has explained, even if the method is always the same, each of the resulting images ends up having its own significance, given by the context and intentions of the original painting, and the contemporary reading of it.
