In late spring, we opened our new studio in Brooklyn. After working remotely for 2020-21, it has been a pleasure settling into the space and being able to collaborate with artists, clients and the Pacific team. A big thank you to all who contributed. We’re excited for what’s to come this fall and beyond.

Love 💕

“Life and Limbs”, Anna-Sophie Berger

The gallery becomes a mouth. It has four pointy teeth and is an aged, even sickly, shade of off-white. The teeth are walls, and on them hang artworks selected by Austrian artist Anna-Sophie Berger for the exhibition life and limbs, Swiss Institute’s fourth installment of its Architecture and Design Series.

Our design and creative collaboration with continues: ‘Gay Betrayals’ by Hannah Quinlan and Rosie Hastings . 💚💚💚

In 1997, during a symposium at Centre Pompidou, Leo Bersani presented a prescient critique of the assimilative tendencies that made “gays melt into the very culture they like to think of themselves as undermining.” Mired in micropolitics, for Bersani, q***r activism had relinquished the radical task of reconfiguring the horizon of the possible. Later published as ‘Gay Betrayals’, Bersani’s intervention champions a truly disruptive vision of homosexuality, one that betrays the relational, identitarian and communitarian foundations of bourgeois heterosexual respectability through “antimonogamous promiscuity.”

Building on extensive artistic research into the politics of q***r spaces and culture some 20 years later, artist duo Hannah Quinlan and Rosie Hastings revisit Bersani’s polemic with a response in three acts. Through a kaleidoscopic array of drawings, preparatory sketches and egg tempera paintings, a narrative of everyday (homo)sociality comes into view.

Democratic Intuition

“Democratic Intuition” is a comprehensive volume documenting Mokgosi's epic painting project that questions conceptions of democracy in relation to the daily lived experiences of southern Africans. The first half of the publication shows Mokgosi's presentation of Democratic Intuition (2013–present) at Jack Shainman Gallery's The School. Over thirty pages of full-bleed images of the exhibition are bookended by texts from Jessica Bell Brown , Seph Rodney , Debora Silverman, and an interview with Antwaun Sargent . The second half of the book displays the series in chronological order, offering a unique opportunity to view the progression of Mokgosi’s contemplation and investigation of democratic ideals. Drawing from history painting and propaganda, Mokgosi includes iconographic details in his compositions that may not be recognized or understood by a Western audience. By combining broadly legible themes with pointed, specific imagery, Mokgosi encourages a desire in the viewer to understand a history beyond what is already known.

In the summer of 2020 we met with and in what was to become an almost two-year journey to make this publication. Tens of thousands of photos and videos of people were edited down to sit among writing about the artists process and philosophy around her practice, the majority beautifully constructed by Jen.

Today we celebrate the release of ‘Can I Ask You A Question’ at congratulations Jen 🎉 and everyone involved in making this publication come to life. 💕

💐 ✨ Rescheduled for this Sunday ✨ 💐

Pacific is pleased to announce the release of ‘Like It Is’ by Austin Lee, co-published with Jeffrey Deitch.

Once reserved to the writings of science fiction, for over a decade now Austin Lee has explored the shrinking dichotomy between the real world and virtual reality. His hypersaturated airbrush paintings are created through a combination of traditional painterly techniques and the latest digital tools.

This extends into ‘Like It Is’, where Lee further investigates recognizable cultural motifs and art historical imagery, spanning from archival photos and tarot cards to Vermeer paintings. Screaming with color, each psychedelic composition is partly inspired by the famous Rorschach test, a diagnostic psychological study that uses a subject’s perception of inkblots to analyze their personality characteristics and emotional functioning.

‘Like It Is’ is a softcover publication documenting Lee's recent solo exhibition at Jeffrey Deitch along with a new series of drawings and interactive AR elements.

Please join us for a launch and signing on Sunday, May 8th from 2–4 pm at Pacific.

70 Flushing Avenue, Brooklyn, NY.
