Oggetto:
Molto cordialmente,
Clark Lawrence

FINDING A NEW LOCATION FOR
READING RETREATS IN RURAL ITALY
My name is Clark Lawrence. I'm a 56-year-old American who has been living in Italy for thirty years. After graduating from College of the Atlantic (Bar Harbor, Maine) with a Bachelor's Degree in Human Ecology and living for a year in Greece, I arrived in Bologna in December of 1995 with an idea to create a cultural association located in the countryside. I was looking for - and found - a quiet place where bibliophiles could meet for reading holidays, for them it was to feel like a home away from home where, for a week or more, they would live, cook, and eat together as a family, reading, sometimes writing, and sharing their stories.
In 1996 Reading Retreats in Rural Italy (Soggiorni di Lettura nella Campagna Italiana) began in the 17th century Palazzo Montefano, and I have been running it ever since as its president. The association has moved three times since its inception and has always been located in large historic homes in the countryside that have allowed us to host classical music concerts, art exhibitions, outdoor cinema, small theatrical performances, piano, yoga and painting courses and private parties for our members. Over 20,000 people from thirty countries have come to visit me and participate in our cultural events.
The current seat of our association is known as La Macchina Fissa, a former pump house along the Mincio River, 25 minutes south of Mantova.
The Library
Inside the 15 rooms of La Macchina Fissa, I have created a library of eight thousand books, approximately half in English and the other half a mix of mostly Italian and other European languages. I collaborate with the Library of Borgo Virgilio and sometimes teach English there. Because of my interest in plants, gardens, and nature, the gardening section of my personal library has grown to feature over 1000 books and 1000 journals and periodicals. I write a column for each issue of the Italian magazine Giardino Antico and often contribute feature articles for the English magazine Gardens Illustrated and the journal Hortus, edited by David Wheeler. I have written two books that were printed and distributed by two different Italian publishers: my first was a gardening memoir, Mezzo Giardiniere now in its fifth printing (2017, Officina Naturalis; Moncalieri, Torino) and the second was a botanical ABC book, Hollington's Florilegium (2023, Libreria della Natura; Milano). I am currently working on a new book for Libreria della Natura, with the working title "A Verbal Herbal", illustrated by the English painter David Hollington.
The Art Collection
While living at Palazzo Montefano (Vedrana di Budrio, BO) 1996-2003, the Castle of Galeazza Pepoli (Crevalcore, Bologna) 2003-2012, and Corte Eremo (Eremo di Curtatone, MN) 2012-2015, I have curated twenty-five exhibitions, collaborating with 21 contemporary artists from 14 different countries. Since 1997, I have collected my favorite paintings from each of them. Many were received as gifts or long-term loans, and so I now hold an art collection of nearly 500 paintings, drawings, and photographs. The works are primarily two-dimensional figurative art, and are displayed throughout the ten guest bedrooms, corridors, two kitchens and communal rooms. The artists are mentioned on a separate page.
The Garden
Over the past thirty years, I have become just as passionate about plants as I am about art and music, and the gardens I created around the properties I have lived in became quite famous, both in Italy and abroad. Some of their fame is due to my blog or diary entries that often take the form of articles or books, but they have appeared in several magazines and on television, as well as in two documentary films. The first, Verde, Ti Voglio Verde, was directed by Myrice Tansini, and described the 2012 earthquakes of Emilia and my move from the Castle of Galeazza to Mantova: books, paintings, plants, pianos, goats, everything. The second, La Macchina Fissa; Clark's Garden was made in 2023 by filmmaker Emilio Tremolada, and tells the quieter story of one year of gardening here at La Macchina Fissa, from the fog and decay of winter to a spring clean up, sowing seeds, and the beauty of summer corn, sunflowers, and autumn pumpkins. The last article published about my garden at the castle of Galeazza was written by Paolo Pejrone in 2012, while the latest article about La Macchina Fissa was written by Alberto Fusari and appeared in a ten-page article of Gardenia's November 2025 issue. Links to articles and books appear at the end of this letter.
The Problem
After eleven years of living and working in La Macchina Fissa, the owner of the property, Fausto Tosi, has asked me to move out within six months. He wants to sell the property. The certified e-mail arrived Tuesday January 20th, revoking the contract that had permitted me to stay rent-free (in exchange for works and maintenance) since December of 2015. The association could soon find itself without a seat.
The Solution
I need to find a place to live, but I am not just looking for a roof over my head; my belongings and the activities I organize rule out the possibility of living in an 40 square meter apartment in a city. Instead of giving up the association and all it does to buy, with the help of friends and family, a tiny place to call my own until death, I would like to find a solution that is both good for me but also allows the association to survive and thrive, as well as helps the owners of a property re-animate, restore, and keep up a property that is difficult to maintain. Friends have told me there are many more places in need of a Clark as caretaker/gardener/curator than there are Clarks willing to do what I have always done for properties that I don't even own. I hope this is true. My solution may be found in another privately owned villa/castle, but may also be found through a collaboration with a publicly owned building - such as an abandoned school, factory, or municipal building. The solution could be temporary (10 years or so), or, if possible, permanent, in which case my collections could be left to the town that hosts me.
Dreaming Big
When designing a new library or museum or looking for a pre-existing future location for an art institution, bigger is usually better. Collections grow. I did an internship in America's oldest public art museum, The Wadsworth Atheneum of Hartford Connecticut, so I have seen how much museum space is dedicated to archives, offices, and storage. Nearly every museum has rooms full of paintings that are unfortunately rarely seen. Even my home at the moment has a storage room where over 100 framed artworks are stored.
Money and Timing
Is success of an association (or person's life) measured only by how much money has been (or can be) made? I hope not. Excluding our most challenging years (2012 and the earthquakes, 2020 and Covid) our association, Reading Retreats in Rural Italy, A.P.S. has an annual income of 40,000 to 50,000 euro. Our expenses are the same as our income. We don't have debts, but Reading Retreats in Rural Italy also doesn't have money in the bank to buy our way out of our current predicament. Over the years, we have asked - and received - from the Comune di Crevalcore a "Patrocinio non oneroso" for events and exhibitions, but we have never asked a town for more. However, it was through a town (Budrio, Bologna) and its assessore (Carlo Pagani, "Il Maestro Giardiniere") that Reading Retreats in Rural Italy found it's first property in 1996, so I am asking mayors and assessori this year if they have suggestions as to what, where, and how Reading Retreats could evolve. Unfortunately time is not on our side, but the owners of this property have expressed a willingness to be lenient and give us a month or two more, if necessary, which places our deadline at August/September 2026.
