Fertile soil is currently being depleted faster than it can be renewed, a crisis referred to as Peak Soil. Soils are now on the list of environmental issues that need global care and caring for them entails caring for those who depend on them. Considering the urgency of creating new cultural aesthetics of soil care practices, the Glocal Worm-ing investigates through design the mutual ways of nurturing human-soil relations and ecologies with earthworms to create better multispecies co-existences in cities. Furthermore, the project is an investigation that seeks to provide emergent soil care practices in public space with earthworms. Earthworms as companion species to humans open up the need of the emergence of building relational networks by applying the emergent soil care practices in order to care to our home, to each other, and to other living beings. A key design output is the Earthworm Manifesto as a transformative storyline embraced by citizens, which introduces awareness, practice, and knowledge that requests a change in the politics of the everyday that becomes part of people’s lives. G(local) level
Now, the project has created an opportunity to co-design and regenerate a public space in the Semirurali Park with 15 new members of the Glocal Worm-ing network. This offers a means to explore its impact on the (g)local level, from where it may expand, and turn it into an opportunity for system change.
