P420 ARTE CONTEMPORANEA E LIBRI ha inaugurato lo scorso 23 gennaio 2010 il proprio spazio a Bologna in Piazza dei Martiri 5/2, adiacente al MAMBO e nei pressi del centro storico e dalla stazione di Bologna. P420 nasce con il preciso intento di presentare e trattare l'opera di artisti appartenenti alle principali avanguardie nate, in Italia e all'estero, tra gli anni ‘50 e gli anni ‘80, con particolare attenzione ai decenni '60 e '70, così incredibilmente ricchi e prolifici di nuove idee e di nuove espressioni artistiche. E' in quest'ottica che la proposta di P420 propone parte dalla corrente Informale degli anni Cinquanta per arrivare alle più recenti esperienze degli anni ‘70, attraverso la destrutturazione di Zero e Nul, le innovazioni artistiche e culturali introdotte dall'Arte Concettuale, Processuale, dalla Land Art, Minimal, Narrative, Performance, Arte ottica-cinetica e Programmata, Arte Povera, Fluxus e manifestazioni multimediali, Poesia Visiva e Concreta, Nuova Pittura, ecc. P420 dedica inoltre la massima attenzione alla ricerca nel settore della documentazione, intendendo arricchire le conoscenze del collezionista mediante una notevole proposta di documenti originali quali cataloghi e monografie degli artisti e delle correnti artistiche trattate. Il supporto documentale non sarà mai considerato secondario all'opera e sarà invece sempre presente nelle mostre e negli allestimenti come parte integrante di un progetto di presentazione dell'Arte Contemporanea al pubblico che integri gli schemi dell'attività commerciale con le esigenze collezionistiche e gli aspetti più prettamente culturali e poetici della ricerca artistica.

: ‘FOOD. Il gusto nell’arte’, a group exhibition at DART – del Bramante - Roma, curated by Suzanne Landau, featuring works by Alessandra Spranzi and Goran Trbuljak.

The artistic research of Alessandra Spranzi is connected with photography, with photographic staging, the reuse of images of her own or taken by others, collage and “photographs of photographs.” Her work reveals a taste for humble materials, everyday situations, domestic settings, neglected and obsolete objects, handiwork and its gestures.

Zagreb-based artist Goran Trbuljak has been active since the late 1960s in the context of conceptual art and the so-called New Art Practice. While searching from the very beginning for alternative means of production and representation of the artwork, Trbuljak has redefined the status of artistic context, asking radical questions about the autonomy of the system of museums and galleries and about the mechanism by which something is accepted as art.

The exhibition explores food as a creative medium, an element of transformation, and a tool for relationships: a universe of shapes, colors, rituals, and meanings where art, history, design, and modernity meet.

: ‘Maison-Main, une assemblée des gestes #2’, a group exhibition at CRAC (Centre Régional d'Art Contemporain Occitanie / Pyrénées-Méditerranée), curated by Christian Rizzo and Anne-Laure Lestage, featuring Rodrigo Hernández’s work.

Rodrigo Hernández has developed a poetics in which elements from literature, art history and observation of the world converge in a new continuously evolving vocabulary, spoken from the surface of things.

As if left alone to gaze at each other, figurative and abstract motifs unite and dialogue with each other, generating works that remind us of the unknown, yet present themselves to us with a warm familiarity. The result, poetic and somehow ironic, looks like the coming together of a universe intended to seek balance between physics and metaphysics, figuration and abstraction.

The exhibition explores gesture, material, and the removal of boundaries between craft and the visual arts, assembling works that take different approaches: raw or ornamental, poetic or politically engaged, flirting with the sacred or the domestic.

Exhibition: ‘Ana Lupas. On Ritual Time’

P420 is pleased to announce ‘On Ritual Time’, an exhibition by Ana Lupas at S.M.A.K. – Museum of Contemporary Art in Ghent (SMAK Gent), curated by Tanja Boon. The exhibition, running from October 10, 2026 to February 21, 2027, traces Lupas's work through some of the most significant stages of her practice, placing it in relation to a selection of works by S P A T A R U (1937–2011).

The multifaceted oeuvre of Ana Lupas (b. 1940, Cluj, Romania) has its origins in early textile works that draw on traditional and inherited techniques such as sewing, knotting and weaving, situating them within a contemporary visual language. This practice forms part of her broader engagement with ancestral knowledge, rituals and spiritual traditions, which also resonates throughout the monumental projects she realised between the 1960s and 1990s. Often developed outside institutional frameworks or in collaboration with local communities, these projects are considered early examples of socially engaged artistic practice.

The exhibition is accompanied by the first monograph dedicated to the oeuvre of Ana Lupas, featuring contributions by Boon, Leontine Coelewij, Marina Lupas, Letizia Ragaglia, Ramona Novicov, Christian Rattemeyer and Mechtild Widrich, jointly published by the Museum Amsterdam, Liechtenstein, Vaduz, and S.M.A.K.

: 'Isa Mona Lisa', a group exhibition at Hamburger Kunsthalle, curated by Brigitte Kölle, featuring Helene Appel's work.

Helene Appel's work consistently focuses on mundane, domestic subjects, rendered with such detail they border on trompe-l'oeil, yet achieve an abstract quality through their scale. Painted from life, these seemingly banal subjects suggest a deeper meaning, reflecting the slow, deliberate process of painting itself – a daily practice and personal dialogue within the artist's studio.

The exhibition provides a lively glimpse of recent art via a selection of unusual works by international contemporary artists.

: ‘Danzante’, a June Crespo’s solo exhibition at Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, curated by Bernardo Follini.

June Crespo has been developing a sculptural and installation practice that investigates the relationship among the body, matter, and architectural space, creating a tension at the limits of scale, weight, and physical presence. Crespo’s sculptural assemblages, which the artist understands as communicating vessels, resonate within our bodies. At times delicate, at others forceful, they always emanate a vital, living quality.

The exhibition brings together sculptures and installations that engage with the body and the viewer’s perception. Inspired by the forms of flowers such as the iris and bird of paradise, the works investigate materials, surfaces, and textures to create physical and sensory experiences that evoke vitality, fragmentation, and presence.

After studying music, Paolo Icaro enrolled in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Turin. In 1958, after abandoning his studies, he began practicing sculpture in Umberto Mastroianni's studio. In 1960, he moved to Rome, where he held his first solo exhibition at the Galleria Schneider in 1962. In 1966, he moved to New York, residing there until 1968.

Icaro's practice is a journey in search of a new grammar of sculpture. A need to question everything, always. Deconstructing to reconstruct, or rather, "Faredisfarerifarevedere." A vocation for doing that goes beyond the accomplished and immutable dimension of the object in order to explore the becoming; that experiences a new sculptural situation, which runs alongside the artist in the same space of existence.

Piero Manai on what would have been his birthday 🕊️

Piero Manai, born on 28 September 1951, gained immediate notice in the early 1970s in Bolognese circles thanks to a kind of painting, to use the words of Flavio Caroli and Pietro Bonfiglioli “blends hyperrealism and conceptual abstraction,” “always somehow depicting the idea of painting itself.”

In that period Manai, just into his twenties, fell ill, and it took a number of years for him to recover. This tragic experience brought about a drastic change in his way of painting and in his subjects, in the early 1980s, which became more convulsive and dramatic.

After again falling ill, Manai died in 1988. “It was as if he had an invisible weight in his head,” Pietro Bonfiglioli recalls, after meeting him slightly earlier. His pictorial language does not seem related to any of the various artistic practices current at the time, from Austrian-German Expressionism of the 1980s to the more Italian Transavanguardia, just to indicate two of them. In fact, in its diversity it seems to reunite them all, so much so that it is hard to find a (probably useless) way of classifying the work.
