THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF ♫
Problems of recycling of and :
Media from past years are not fully recyclable, which has damaged the environment in one measure: modern vinyls (which seem to be making a comeback, with sales up 12%) contain on average 135 grams of PVC, a resin thermoplastic with a carbon footprint of 0.5 kg of CO2; this material is only partially reusable due to the high processing costs, and all this translates into unflattering tons of carbon dioxide; and we are not considering transportation and packaging. The CDs, made of polycarbonate and aluminum, are slightly less polluting, but are not recycled because they are made of mixed materials that are difficult to separate, and which in any case would release toxic substances when processed for future reuse.
Streaming pollutes:
With the internet this does not occur. So the web beats the old media 10 to 0? No, not at all. Even if the new formats are intangible, they surprisingly have a high environmental impact. In fact, a huge amount of electricity is required to manage and cool the servers and upgrade the listening networks for streaming. Every time we play a track there is a certain expenditure of energy and a certain release of CO2. If you listen to digital music through a hi-fi sound system, it is estimated that energy consumption is 107 kilowatt hours of electricity per year. A cd player consumes 34.7.
