Chawan.
Wheel thrown and paddled collect clay; ash glaze; wood fired on shells.
In exhibition at .shop London from June the 3rd.
I love it when pieces come out of the kiln as if they're emerging from the depths of the sea, maybe part of a lost, ancient cargo, or a pirate's treasure!

Puffer fish! 🐡
A central piece of my upcoming exhibition at .shop in London.
A perfect example of my latest work, spontaneous and tactile.
Everything comes from the same, collected material: clay is sieved and wheel thrown, and the remaining stones are milled to a fine powder and mixed with wood ash to obtain the glaze. The two elements are then reunited by the firing, as they were for probably millions of years and will now be again.

Granite, clay and ash glaze

Working on a series of small vases, developing unique and spontaneous forms, still carrying a cohesive look when put together.

This rich green glaze is based on production waste granite, which was ball milled and mixed with local clay from the river next to the studio and trusty wood ash from a pizzeria.

Collected glaze materials

Lately a few people asked me if all my shapes are pinched or coiled. Actually most of my pieces are wheel thrown. I have been trying to loosen up my approach and shapes for years, focusing on the moment, the inspiration, and not forcing the clay too much, but trying to have a conversation with the material.
But wheel throwing in not a religion for me, just a tool, which I can use in combination with other tools. In this piece, a wheel thrown body got a hand pinched rim.

Plate 🍆
Once you see it, you can't unsee it. Completely accidental.
All materials are collected.
I'm in love with this glaze. It's made from the leftover stones I sieve out of the clay, milled into powder and mixed with wood ash.

Collected kaolinitic clay, no glaze applied, wood fired.
Wadding leaving marks is actually preserving the true colour of clay from the ash build-up.

Small cup, for tea, coffee or liquor.
Extruded collected clay; ash liner glaze, soda fired.
I came up with this idea just before going to China. I was invited to a ceramic market in Jingdezhen, where we had to carry our pieces in a suitcase, so small cups seemed the perfect solution. I made enough to fill a whole kiln and soda fired them.
Luckily for you I kept some in the studio, so I have plenty available. Info in DM.
