September Artist-in-Residence Ioulia Akhmadeeva () is a Mexican visual artist, researcher, and professor based in Morelia, Mexico, where she has lived and developed her artistic career since 1994. She works across printmaking, drawing, artist's books, book-objects, and expanded approaches to graphic arts.
Memory and its forms of registration are central to her practice. Her projects often emerge from personal and collective histories, migration, identity, everyday experience, and our relationship with place. Documents, photographs, letters, testimonies, handwriting, and personal objects frequently become starting points for her work. Through paper, textiles, printmaking, photography, drawing, and mixed-media processes, she creates visual and material narratives in which memory is understood not as a fixed archive, but as something continuously reconstructed and transformed.
A central part of her practice is the artist's book, which she approaches as a space where image, text, object, material, and time can coexist and generate different forms of reading and experience.
During her residency at Nes, Ioulia will develop Echoes of Nature and Belonging, a new body of work inspired by her temporary experience of living in Iceland. Through direct observation of the landscape, walking, drawing, watercolor, handwriting, and material experimentation, she will create artist's books and book-objects exploring how inhabiting an unfamiliar territory can activate memories and transform our perception of place and belonging.
The resulting works will become visual and material traces of her encounter with Iceland — a personal archive connecting landscape, memory, and the experience of temporarily inhabiting a new territory.
