Nes Artist Residency

Nes Artist Residency At the edge of the sea we welcome artists from all disciplines to engage, develop, and create. The first artists in residence arrived in June of that year.

NES Artist Residency was founded in March 2008 in Skagaströnd, a small town in northwest Iceland. Now one of the largest residencies in Iceland, NES currently hosts between 90-120 artists per year. NES provides artists with a workspace and living quarters within Skagaströnd, and the freedom to create as they wish. During their stay, artists live in a shared house. The NES studios, located at Fjörubraut 8, are housed in what once was the main fish processing plant of Skagaströnd.

June Artist-in-Residence Chelsea Wong () is an emerging artist from Sydney, Australia, practising on Wallumedegal and Gadigal lands. She is a recent graduate in 2026 from the University of New South Wales with a Bachelor of Fine arts degree majoring in drawing and photography. She works across photography, drawing, video work and performance art.

Chelsea's work is centered on human ruins. Her practice asks: what is the identity of a liminal space – such as an abandoned building – and how does it impact, or change our own identity when we exist in them? She examines abandoned spaces from an anticapitalist and anti-consumerist point of view, reflecting on the cyclical processes of urban destruction and reconstruction.

During her stay in Skagaströnd, Chelsea will continue exploring abandoned spaces. She is particularly interested in the human body as sculpture in these unstable environments, contorting mimicking and fusing the body with the geometric structures of derelict buildings and the organic forms of the beautiful and bizarre landscape.

May Writer-in-Residence Yana Zgurskaya is a writer and a translator born and residing in Kazakhstan. Her writing is largely centered around working with memory and lived experience, as well as exploring the relationship between form and content. While at Nes, she has been piecing together a series of flash fictions, expanding them into a novel-length manuscript that explores themes of identity, displacement, human condition, and what it means to be a human—a woman—a girl—a self.
