Konst i Halland – SÍM Residency Exchange 2026 invites one professional artist based in Iceland to take part in a one-month research residency exploring the intersection of public art, urban development, infrastructure, and the designed living environment (Gestaltad livsmiljö).
Konst i Halland (Art in Halland) is a regional resource centre operated by Region Halland and Halland Art Museum.
This residency is rooted in Sweden’s national policy area Designed Living Environment (Gestaltad livsmiljö) — where art, architecture, design, and spatial planning work together to shape sustainable, inclusive, and meaningful environments. It’s about dialogue. It’s about experimentation. It’s about process — not product.
Through collaboration with students, researchers, engineers, and cultural professionals, the selected artist will investigate how contemporary artistic practice can engage with public space and the built environment.
✨ What makes this residency unique?
Access to Fab Lab Halmstad for digital fabrication, prototyping, and material experimentation — combined with interdisciplinary exchange across art and engineering.
📍 Location: Halmstad, Sweden
You will collaborate with:
• Halmstad University (Högskolan i Halmstad)
• Fab Lab Halmstad
• Hallands Konstmuseum
• Konst i Halland
• Local and regional artists
• Engineering students (civil engineering)
🌍 In parallel, one artist from Halland will undertake a residency at SÍM Residency in Reykjavík — forming a reciprocal exchange between Sweden and Iceland.
💼 WHAT THE RESIDENCY INCLUDES
✔ 3-day teaching workshop (7–9 October, 6 hrs/day) for:
– 15 civil engineering students
– 3 local artists
✔ Paid artist meeting/workshop at Fab Lab (2 hrs, 19 Oct)
✔ Paid panel discussion / artist talk at Hallands Konstmuseum (21 Oct)
✔ Paid travel (Reykjavík ↔ Halmstad)
✔ Accommodation at Kaptenshamns Hotell & Vandrarhem (private room & bath, shared kitchen)
✔ Full access to Fab Lab for independent work
✔ Collaboration with teachers & students
✔ Field trip with Konst i Halland
✔ Connection with Region Halland’s film residency
✔ Networking opportunities
💰 FINANCIAL TERMS
Artist Fee:
45,000 SEK (approx. 615,595 ISK) + VAT if applicable
Payment by invoice
Travel: Covered & reimbursed
Accommodation: Paid (private bedroom & bathroom)

This is a research-based, process-oriented programme.
The emphasis is on:
• Critical reflection

The residency encourages exploration rather than the production of a finished artwork.

Experience with digital fabrication is welcome — but not required.
