FINISSAGE 🪨 I Paint the Mountain with Myself

This Sunday at 6 pm, Zekarias will be joined by petals, Pétur Eggertsson, and Hrafnkell Tumi Georgsson, for the remaining three duets, and the last day of their exhibition! What impressions will be left beyond the space and time of the exhibition?

🤝petals is a multi instrumentalist, composer of frantic musics, a retired poet, and author of kalimba, marsh-river-raft-feather, & glee & bless ~ all titles by guillemot press. petals is interested in cats, bells, playing hard (like her and your life depend on it), improvisation and gathering seemingly irreconcilable sounds and textures. petals also loves arranging flowers and making lamps.

🤝Pétur Eggertsson is a composer and educator who works on the periphery of performance and visual art.. A transformation of sound through arbitrary translation into different mediums (or vice versa) has been a focus in his work and additionally, the roles of the performer and audience are investigated and augmented. The mechanics and etiquette of musicking in all forms is dissected and deconstructed, whether it be attending a musical event, listening, creating or performing sound, with an intention of creating possibilities of intervention for all involved.

🤝Hrafnkell Tumi Georgsson graduated with a BA in Fine Art from the Iceland University of the Arts in 2022. He primarily works with video and sculpture, using landscape and physical phenomena to explore connections to place and between people. Alongside his artistic practice, Hrafnkell works as a filmmaker. He has exhibited his art and videos in Iceland and internationally, and recently held a solo show at Kling & Bang in Reykjavík.

Zekarias Musele Thompson has collected impressions from artists important to their time painting. One of the first painters they met in Iceland is Eggert Pétursson, who will be in visual duet throughout the exhibition, as well as in conversation with Zekarias on September 7th. This will be the first out of four duets Zekarias will perform during their exhibition “I Paint the Mountain with Myself”, which opens today.

Associate Gallery warmly welcomes you to “I Paint the Mountain with Myself”, Zekarias Musele Thompson’s first solo exhibition in Iceland. The opening reception will take place on Saturday, August 16th, at 3 pm.

The paintings in the exhibition form a landscape, quilted from fleeting moments, based on the artist’s memories and relationship to a familiarizing place.

Zekarias Musele Thompson (b. 1983, they/them/their) is an artist based in Oakland, CA, and Reykjavik, IS, often working in sonic composition, mark-making, photography, collaborative group practice & performance, and writing. Their practice is concerned with humanity’s conceptual and emotional organizational structures—and how we bring them into material form. Zekarias has presented solo exhibitions and projects at the Museum of the African Diaspora, the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, The Lab, Gray Area, the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History, and the Center for New Music and Audio Technologies. Zekarias is a co-founder of Working Name Studios, a collectively owned and organized arts institution with the mission of building institutional stability and equity for underrepresented creative practices, ideas, and people. They were part of the Emerging Artist Program at the MoAD for 2024, and are recent MFA graduate from the Department of Art Practice at UC Berkeley.

Associate Gallery proudly presents the opening of Rannveig Jónsdóttir’s solo exhibition, SOURCE, on Saturday, May 17 between 3 and 5 pm. The exhibition will be open on Saturdays from 14 to 17 and by agreement until June 7.

The exhibition explores the relationship between humans and water, where body and landscape reflect one another. The works are based on a collaboration with hydrologist Jón Ottó Gunnarsson, using flow measurements in the Langá river in Engidal to offer insight into the movement of water beneath the surface. Salt plays a key role in the research – acting as a connector between body and water. In hydrology, it is used to trace flow; in the body, it regulates balance and movement.
