Ecotourism in Iran | Where Culture Lives Every Day

From the forests of Gilan to the deserts of Yazd and the mountains of Kurdistan, Iran’s eco-lodges offer a different way of traveling—one that feels close to everyday life and local culture.

Here, traditions are not performed; they are lived. Food, architecture, crafts, music, and customs continue naturally within communities, making ecotourism a living form of cultural heritage.

Across Iran, eco-lodges also help strengthen rural livelihoods and support more sustainable tourism practices.

Across the ECO region, this approach quietly builds cultural understanding and connection between nations.

LANDAY: The Voice of Pashtun Oral Tradition

For centuries, the people of Afghanistan have answered this question through Landay—a unique form of Pashto folk poetry that captures love, longing, hope, sorrow, humor, and resilience in only two short verses.

Passed down orally from generation to generation, Landays are among the most treasured expressions of Afghanistan’s intangible cultural heritage. Many of these poems were composed and preserved by women, offering a rare glimpse into their emotions, dreams, and everyday experiences.

Brief in form yet profound in meaning, Landay continues to connect the past with the present, keeping alive the voices, memories, and cultural identity of Pashtun communities.

Improvisational Performance in Tajik Culture

Badiha (بدیهه) is the spontaneous creation of poetry, speech, or music without preparation—a sign of mastery in the Persian–Tajik tradition.

In Tajik folk culture, it appears mainly in wedding performances, where two performers exchange improvised poetic lines on themes of love, humor, and everyday life.

Gestures, facial expressions, and traditional dress are essential parts of the performance.

Similar traditions exist in the region:
🇺🇿 Lapar (Uzbekistan)
🇰🇿🇰🇬 Aitysh (Kazakhstan & Kyrgyzstan)
🇦🇫 Dialogic folk songs (Afghanistan)

Tajik musical heritage such as Shashmaqam (UNESCO) and Falak (UNESCO) also reflects this rich oral tradition.
