Fisherman’s Norooz, to celebrate the start of fishing season, were held in Salakh village on the evening of 23rd July. The festival, which is also known as Norooz-e Sayyad, is one of the most important rituals for the local fishermen, and represents the beginning of a new year for the villagers, rather than national Norooz in late March.
Fishing, as well as eating fish, is prohibited on the day, since it is believed that fish should be reproduced. People celebrate the coming of the year by wearing new clothes and enjoy various attractions such as tugs-of-war, traditional music plays by chorus and drums, and performances by blackface dancers who are disguised as animals.
Fisherman's Norooz festivals are generally held toward the end of the 4th month of the Iranian solar calendar. However the exact date is calculated and determined by wise old men in the village in the last minute.
