Kashkul Kashkul is a research, preservation, and translation collective. Kashkul is a research, translation, and preservation collaborative based in Sulaimani, Iraq.

Iraqi, Kurdish, and American scholars come together to pursue projects of their own design.
“Kashkul” has two traditional meanings in Kurdish: the Sufi’s begging bowl and the traveler’s bindle. Over time, the traveling scholar cared less for the clothes or bowl he carried and more for the poetry, history, philosophy and other knowledge he collected in his notebook–and the notebook became his bind

le, his kashkul. Books of this nature, curated by an individual or a group of individuals, tenderly preserved the knowledge of their time for generations to come. All members of the collaborative hope that this is our work, in the digital world: to create, curate, and preserve culture in the northern regions of Iraq. This is our kashkul.

At the Kurdish Studies Forum on September 27, 2025, we listened to an excerpt from Falak, a track from Gashtyar Kawa’s upcoming album, Bayat Dorian. With the album now complete and its release approaching, we extend our congratulations to Gashtyar on this meaningful work.

The panel, “Approaches to Preservation Across Kurdistan,” moderated by Behrooz Chamanara, brought together scholars to explore how art and music serve a dual purpose: as tools for engaging with existing archives, and as mediums for creating new ones.

Our speakers reflected on two essential dimensions of Kashkul’s approach to preservation, which formed the central inquiry of the panel: how these archival efforts generate new forms of creative expression, and how they confront new ethical questions across different collections.

On May 22nd, we worked with Dya Mohammed, Nwa Mahmood, and students at AUIS to paint four water tanks on campus.

We want to bring more visible art to campus, and this project is one example of that shared effort. It gave students a chance to work closely with artists from the city and take part in shaping a visible part of the campus. We value the time spent working together in this way, and here are some good moments.

Friends in Devon,

The Kashkul team will be at the University of Exeter to launch Ismail Khayat’s digital collection.

With the Digital Archive of the Middle East, we will talk about new ways to access and engage with Khayat’s artwork, supporting its preservation and wider availability.

The talk will end with the screening of a documentary on Khayat, directed by Pshtiwan Babakr.
