Open Call for volunteers for MANIFEST 2023

Currently the only annual international dance-film festival in South Asia, it has received more than 200 submissions in its second edition from across 5 continents.

Who should apply- applicants over 18 years old interested in exhibition design, audience design, film curation, live dance and cross-media work.

AuroApaar in partnership with Narthaki is announcing India’s first-ever incubator for dance-films.

The 3 week process will support short dance-film projects from idea to screening stage, including a two-week residency near Pondicherry. Artistic and technical support will be provided in 5 stages till the final video output and distribution to international film festivals

Stage 1- expand ideas online

Stage 2- movement prep

Stage 3- shoot on location

Stage 4 - edit

Stage 5 - pilot screening, feedback and submissions to international film festivals

Madhuja Mukherjee is Professor of Film Studies at Jadavpur University, India. She extends her research into art-practice, curatorial-work and filmmaking. Madhuja studied Literature (1992), Cinema (1996) and Social Sciences (1998), and her Ph.D (2008) involves subjects of industrial history, technological transformations, archives, media ecologies, urban and public cultures. She is the author of ‘New Theatres Ltd.’ (2009), editor of ‘Aural Films, Oral Cultures’ (2012), and of the award-winning anthology ‘Voices of the Talking Stars’ (2017). Recently, she (co) edited the volumes: ‘Popular Cinema in Bengal’ (2020), and ‘Industrial Networks and Cinemas of India’ (2021). Her first feature-film ‘Carnival’ (2012) had its World Premiere at the 41st International Film Festival Rotterdam 2012, and her second feature, ‘Deep6’ (2021), had its World Premiere at the 26th Busan International Film Festival 2021. Currently, she is co-authoring the book: Ageing, Gender and Sexuality in Hindi Cinema, and editing a series of graphic-stories titled ‘Body Matters’. Since 2014, Madhuja is the artistic director of TENT Little Cinema International Festival, renamed TENT Biennale Kolkata, a festival for experimental films and new media art.

Arjun Gourisaria (1964- ) is an entrepreneur, filmmaker, editor and instructor. From 1989 till date, he's directed and produced over 500 advertising commercials and has been responsible for over a 1000 hours of television programming across both fiction and non-fiction genres. He has won many awards, including two Indian National Awards for Editing - for the documentaries 'Gulabi Gang' (2014) and 'Shut Up Sona' (2020). His maiden co-directorial feature, 'Sthaniya Sambaad' (2011) won the best film award at the New York Indian Film Festival. He now lives in Kolkata and, when not brooding on life, can be found playing his guitar.

Jury, MANIFEST dance-film festival.

Anita Ratnam is multi-disciplinary performer and choreographer whose work straddles classical and contemporary Indian dance. The recipient of both national and international awards like the Nritya Choodamani, Chennai and Vishwa Kala Ratna, UK, she has been involved in Indian dance in various roles including as a mentor, curator and critic. Anita Ratnam has founded a number of significant projects such as India’s largest digital portal for dance.
