Today, I had the honor of being invited by Ram Sevak Sabha, Nainital, as part of the ongoing Nanda Devi Festival celebrations. The session focused on the rich tradition of Aipan Art of Uttarakhand, a unique cultural heritage that has been preserved and nurtured primarily by women across generations.
During the interaction, I discussed the historical and cultural significance of Aipan, the symbolism of its traditional motifs, and the important role women have played in safeguarding this folk art. The discussion also highlighted the challenges faced by artisans and entrepreneurs in rural and village areas, including market access, product diversification, branding, and sustaining traditional knowledge in a rapidly changing world.
An important aspect of the talk was the emergence of contemporary Aipan Art, where traditional motifs are being creatively adapted into modern products, home décor, textiles, and sustainable handicrafts, helping to create livelihood opportunities while preserving cultural identity.
It was encouraging to see the interest and enthusiasm of the participants toward protecting and promoting Uttarakhand’s intangible cultural heritage. Such dialogues are essential for ensuring that traditional art forms remain relevant, economically viable, and appreciated by future generations.
I sincerely thank Ram Sevak Sabha, Nainital, for providing this valuable platform during the sacred Nanda Devi Festival and for their continuous efforts in celebrating the cultural traditions of Uttarakhand.
