Kashi Peetham | Sri Gaudapadacharya Matha
Kashi Peetham (also known as Sri Gaudapadacharya Kashi Peetham) is one of the oldest and most revered Advaita Vedanta monastic institutions in India. It belongs to the Guru shishya Sampradaya, established in the spiritual lineage of Adi Guru Gaudapadacharya, the grand guru of Adi Shankaracharya. The Peetham is traditionally based in Kashi (Varanasi) , Uttarpradesh and has upheld an line of 41 pontiffs (Peethadhipathis).
Adi Guru Gaudapadacharya
Sri Gaudapadacharya, a 6th-century philosopher-saint, is regarded as the earliest historical teacher of Advaita Vedanta. His most influential work is the Mandukya Karika, a profound philosophical commentary on the Mandukya Upanishad. In this treatise, he laid the foundational principles of non-dualism (Advaita), which later deeply influenced Adi Shankaracharya, one of the most celebrated theologians and reformers in Hinduism. Gaudapada is considered the Paramaguru (preceptor's preceptor) in the Advaita lineage.
Lineage of Pontiffs
The Sri Gaudapadacharya Matha Kashi Peetham has maintained a continuous spiritual lineage of 41 pontiffs, who have safeguarded the tradition of Advaita Vedanta across generations.
40th Pontiff: Sri Chandrashekhara Saraswati Gaudapadacharya Swamiji
Sri Chandrashekhara Saraswati Swamiji was the 40th Peethadhipathi of the Kashi Peetham. Under his stewardship, the Matha flourished as a center for Vedantic learning and spiritual practice.
41st Pontiff: Sri Shiva Nagendra Saraswati Gaudapadacharya Swamiji
Sri Shiva Nagendra Saraswati Gaudapadacharya Swamiji is the 41st and current Pontiff (Peethadhipathi) of the Matha. He was initiated into Thuriya Ashrama and was blessed by his predecessor, Sri Chandrashekhara Saraswati Swamiji. As the present head, Swamiji upholds the legacy of Advaita Vedanta, guides disciples, and leads Vedic studies and spiritual practices.
Swamiji is known for:
