Witness the historic staging of Sudrakaโs timeless story, Mrcchakatikam, brought to life through the worldโs oldest surviving theatre tradition, Koodiyattamโs classical form under the legendary Koodiyattam exponent and director G.Venu.
Mrcchakatikam (โThe Little Clay Cartโ) is one of Sanskrit literatureโs most vibrant plays, alive with wit, romance, and drama. The play follows Charudatta, a noble Brahmin merchant, and Vasantasena, a courtesan of beauty and heart, against a backdrop of gamblers, monks, thieves, and revolutionaries. Amid mistaken identities, moral conflict and the triumph of truth, the play celebrates compassion, love, and social justice-themes that remain as resonant today as they were centuries ago. The Natanakairali troupe present the work entirely within Koodiyattamโs classical grammarโits gestures, music, and rhythm. Supported by Bhoomija Trust, this production offers the audience a rare encounter with timeless theatre.
Director G.Venu shares that when an important play such as Mrcchakatikam is being presented in the format of Kutiyattam in present times, it enhances the contemporary relevance of the ancient art form.
