I,
Infact wear my pride in gold.

Descending only to rise higher,
I dive deep to make it clear and strong.
My ancestry belongs to no one but me
I see people as of blood like my own,
And not what you want me to believe.

Keep saying you don’t want it.
I will know when you lie.
Hide if you must,
My little snowglobe, I will shake you up if I like!

Encumbrances / Albatross :

We,
The great gatherers of adoration,
We are all made up of stories.
There was once a story I was told,

About the veil:

From where you see it all and yet hide yourself,
Where one can continue to practice
Our inherent legacy of pretense,
Yet be present.

To search for oneself
(Or someone?)
through the intricate mesh
Of its beautifully designed lace,
Can only lead to a mirage.

And so she lives there.

This outline that I see.
Hushed away……

Behind the paraphernalia,
layers away from the gilding
Of the tinsel world.
Under the skin

Blissfully unaware.

“It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.”

Well, some works just make you think too hard!!
You have in your vision exactly the feeling that you want to translate onto the canvas. Yet one keeps
going back and forth, drawing and redrawing….trying hard to convince oneself.
And those weeks become months and other works come and go in between ….
Is it getting too loud, too sharp, unreal or disconnected? Don’t want to lose the subtly, but yet I want to be clear.
You tell yourself to resist the urge to fade those bright colours. Cause this feeling is about celebrating the world of imagination!!

And so finally after yet another morning at the studio, once again rubbing away that dry brush on the canvas…
I tell myself,
This is complete!!

All the primary colours will remain…all the white will shine through… some drawing will be sharp and so what if few figures fade away in the wilderness…
Afterall;
these are “Runaway thoughts……”

Some works find corners, some live in bedrooms or adorn dinning spaces…
this one made way into a beautiful home some years ago….. am happy to receive these images from the collector to refresh memories of the journey through my growing practice in art.

“It is in my subconscious that I travel to places often unknown or revisit those that I may have forgotten ...
Transiting through many states of one’s mind, is not always an experience where you record every element in your vision.

Here, all notions of time erased, I am hiding behind translucent walls, reinventing personal battle grounds and sticking pieces of our mundane routines and possessions in my dairy.”

This painting was part of the solo show titled “Slivers of Memories”, hosted by Red Earth art gallery, Vadodara. 2014.

Title- “ Queen Substance”

“The queen must produce some substance that attracts the workers and that can be obtained from her only by direct contact. This substance evidently stimulates the normal working behaviour in the hive.
This chemical messenger has been called ‘queen substance’; experiments have shown that the bees obtain it directly from the body of the queen” - Man and insects.

There are times when stories and myths take form in flesh and feel like “déjà vu”. But it actually should be the other way round; after all, all tales take cue from reality- and history is for us to believe in.
When painting, the subject/ the scene , stays as chosen, the feeling is what changes through lucid colours and contrast of surface.
Everything shows as though through layers of sheer shaded cloth….
… those transparent thoughts …which are in our existence, like spots of time.

“Of the falling Sun”
& the
“Melting moonlight”

Some works find their homes instantly….. while some wait till they find their ideal homes….
And so it was with the sun and the moon paintings which refused to stay apart.

Sometime early last year,a gentleman in Baroda was most enthusiastic about collecting new works of art even before he knew where he’s placing them since the house he was making was still a long way to completion….
Homes are not just the doors, walls and the swanky fixtures… but they are about memories, experiences and these little pieces of stories that we collect to energise our space.

“Of the Falling Sun”, depicts a tree with leaves made of wings, which like those of Icarus, melt as the sun gets closer.

While “Melting moonlight” has a forest scene filled with a creamy soft light on a full moon night which seems to slip away from the fingers of Alice….

Changing seasons,
clear night skies,
through the looking glass,
from wonderland
Alice has more stories tell…

“there are in our existence ……
….. spots of time“

Still revisiting paintings from personal history….and their forever homes.

In order to experience the life of a bird in cage,one has to shrink to its size first. In the cage, the first thing we must get used to is the confinement. The limitations that have been chosen, you live with unconsciously. The borders imposed, you will one day erase or convince yourself of the surreal existence.

The content of these paintings draw much from literature, poetry, history. Less glorious than it is intense, like fluid music….romantic relationships manifest in myriad ways.
Sometimes actualised and more often than not, left unfulfilled….
They lead many an artist to creative contemplation and use of this idiom in their work.

Change of the year and I’m still working on my new canvases……
Thought it was time to revisit “history” this month and look at my work from 15 years ago, a time of images galore, lots to say and record!

NAME / PLACE / ANIMAL /THING

The work includes several renditions of ducks - a realistic sticker from a children’s book, a white duck (the kind most people would paint a duck), a drawing of a mechanic skeletal of a duck and finally a duck on wheels. This apart, there’s an image of a circus elephant drawing, a drawing of a domesticated dog, and “The Taj” all in a sticker… set against a patch work wall with the inlay pattern of the monument.

An image processing, which may or may not lead to understanding of the fact that each image here is but an object with a name. Drawn from encyclopaedias and children sticker books .. it recounts works of masters like Bruegel and Bosh and their arbitrary juxtapositions of images, like a visual puzzle between seemingly unrelated objects.

They say some impressions from your childhood always stay forever…

Similar was this brief exploratory journey where words from long ago seem to finally appear as images. “The Santhal family”, in their own habitat, with tribal crafts and their simple drawings on the wall to lure the tourist to notice them, also turning one’s staple diet into a desirable exotica!
And so my Shanti Niketan sojourn was complete with the art, craft, the earth and more….

… back in Kolkata, what I saw at “The Alipore Museum” was an accidental surprise! I had targeted to catch the last few shows on my list of the Bengal biennial but ended up spending my first hour just exploring “the jail”, gratefully humbled walking in front of doors that had honourable prisoners and reading the stories of how their days unfolded. Do read the martyr’s list I have shared🙏.
Leaving myself with little time now, I could not look deep into the collection of paintings in the wonderful show titled “Kali” but there were some powerful images I wanted to carry back on the phone. Both contemporary and pre-contemporary.

Great old institutions are made of people who have walked those corridors, stalwarts who have devoted hours to the next generation and selflessly taught all that they have learnt from time….
Walking into such places is reliving a piece of history and privilege for those who get to teach there ….
Government college of art and crafts at Kolkata was founded 170 years ago in mid 1800’s, by Shri Abanindranath Tagore under the British rule and since then many great artists have studied or taught there.
More than 50 years later, in early 1900’s Kala Bhavan in Shantiniketan, Bengal, was founded by Noble Laureate Rabindranath Tagore and it soon became the one of most prestigious college of India.
Going through the slice of cultural history with friends Muktinath Mondal and Sahu and others.

Looking at oneself sometimes through the camera, through the eyes of another or in the mirror …..
Some interesting documentation of artists by their own hand or that of another at Bengal Biennial.
While at the Indian museum I have now familiarised myself with the fine oil on canvas portraits by artist Atul Bose, who was the principal of the art college in Kolkata more than 5 decades ago.
And was also glad to finally get to catch a finely curated show of rare works of women artists of the last century. Many of whom I was not familiar with being lost or over shadowed ….
“Of spaces of their Own” Prakar gallery, a must see if you are in the City of Joy!
