महाभारत के निम्न श्लोक से इस “अहिंसा परमो धर्मः धर्म हिंसा तथैव च:” श्लोक को बनाया गया है जो कि कुछ इस प्रकार है –

अहिंसा परमो धर्मस्तथाहिंसा परं तपः ।
अहिंसा परमं सत्यं यतो धर्मः प्रवर्तते ॥
