Paper, but make it architecture.

Ankon Mitra (Ankon Mitra), Curator and Artistic Director of Indian Paper Triennial and Meera Curam (Meera Curam), our residency director sit down to talk Paper Architectonics, the collaboration bringing the India Paper Triennial to Hampi Art Labs. For Ankon, this is "a celebration of paper at a scale which has not happened in India before," with artists arriving to "create works which also respond to the landscape, ecology and architecture of Hampi."

Meera sees it as part of a larger vision. One where "paper is beyond drawing and painting," and where this project has managed "to imagine paper in a three dimensional form and also with a structure."

We are delighted to spotlight Soma Das (Soma Das), who joined us as a part of batch 4 in 2024.

In the time since, Soma's work has been presented by Emami Art, Kolkata (Emami Art) at Art Mumbai 2025, IAF Editions Hyderabad 2025, and India Art Fair 2025. Her practice has grown well beyond gouache painting. Drawing on memory, material, and place, she now works across metal, wood, terracotta, hand embroidery, and appliqué.

"Lately, I have been drawing inspiration from a multitude of influences: the liberating experience of living away from my familiar space at Hampi Art Labs that continues to impact my practice; my late father's livelihood as a carpenter; and my mother's habit of collecting bits and pieces from magazines, among other things. This has led me to explore newer mediums alongside paintings in gouache."

Soma's solo exhibition opens soon at Emami Art, Kolkata in August 2026.

Meet the artists at work over the next few weeks:

Karthik Dondeti (Karthik Dondeti | Code x Architecture x Art), a computational designer and architect whose forms emerge from generative systems and code.

Nikheel Aphale (Nikheel Aphale), a calligraphy artist transforming the Devanagari script into contemporary abstract art.

Sanhita Chaturvedi (Sanhita Chaturvedi), an architect and founder of Studio C+C, with a practice rooted in high-rise design and research.

Aravindan Arumugam (Aravindan Arumugam), a multidisciplinary artist working across film, visual effects, projection mapping, and origami.

The project is curated by India Paper Triennial's founder-director Ankon Mitra (Ankon Mitra) and our residency director Meera Curam (Meera Curam).

Hampi Art Labs invites artists from across India to apply for our upcoming residency, running January to March 2027, three months to step away from the everyday and give your practice the focus it deserves.

Set near the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hampi, our labs offer spacious studios, workshops in ceramics, printmaking, 3D printing, and on-campus housing. A space to retreat, experiment and create, along with a grant to support new work.

We welcome early to mid-career practitioners working across all visual art disciplines: painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, video, sculpture, ceramics, and interdisciplinary practices. Artists drawn to hands-on, experimental, or field-based approaches to making are especially encouraged to apply.

Applications close on 22 June 2026. Apply through the link in our bio.
(Early applications are encouraged)

: We revisit the practice of Gurjeet Singh () (July–September 2025), whose work pushes back against queerphobia with needle and thread in his soft sculptures.

Following his residency at Hampi Art Labs, Gurjeet is developing works for his upcoming solo show in the US. He says: "I resumed painting at the Labs after years, played around with ceramics, even had a live performance and am continuing my practice in all of these."

Currently in Paris for a two-month residency at Fondation Fiminco, Gurjeet is continuing his experiments with painting and ceramics, further exploring gouache, sculpture, while also focusing on performance art.

: Geetanjali Bayan () (Batch 3) credits Hampi Art Labs as a turning point in her practice. Working with stitching, weaving, and dyed fibres, she builds soft, layered landscapes drawn from childhood memory and present surroundings with thread acting as a way to connect, hold, and heal.

“It gave me the space and clarity to rethink my approach and deepen my engagement with materials and ideas. Since then, I’ve shown in a few exhibitions, and seeing my work at India Art Fair 2026 was a significant moment.”

Geetanjali is continuing her thought through other residencies, exploring memory, material, and the relationship between inner and outer landscapes.

We are delighted to welcome our 2026 Advisory Board: Aaron Cezar (), Andreas Teoh, Jitish Kallat (), Shireen Gandhy (), and Shilpa Gupta (). Their perspectives and experience will help shape the spirit of Hampi Art Labs in the year ahead.
