A day in Anegundi with VishNature (VishNature), following the journey of banana fibre, from something often discarded or burned after harvest to a material shaped by skilled hands. Soaked, stripped and dried, the fibre is twisted into rope with a rhythm learned over years.

Our artists joined this process, slowly discovering the movement of the fibre through their fingers and learning from hands that instinctively know the material. Watching waste become form, one twist at a time.

Some days unfold in the studio. Others begin on winding roads, in workshops, conversations, and encounters with unfamiliar landscapes. Together, they become part of the residency’s unfolding story.

From exploring Kinnal’s living craft traditions and the landscapes of Sanapur, Sandur and Anegundi, to getting hands-on with printmaking, sharing practices, exchanging ideas through artist presentations and mentorship sessions, and spending time in the studio, each experience has added something new to the artists’ evolving journeys.

In Studio 4, Reppandee Lepcha's (R E P P A N D E E) practice lies in the intersection of language, materiality, and community narrative to respond to the ever-changing landscape of identity, community, ecology, and tradition.

What draws Reppandee to this region is the striking contrast between the different environments she has encountered here - the ancient ruins and village landscapes of Hampi on one hand, and the industrial landscape and township on the other ; Fragments of different worlds sharing the same land, the same air, the same consequences, yet barely touching.

Reppandee transforms Rong into visual patterns, embedding the script into clay, fabric, and paper and at Hampi, this practice finds new ground. Responding to the stillness of the landscape around her, she sees in it something familiar: a community like a landscape shaped, weathered, and quietly insisting on continuing.

“As if time has been frozen into a monument. Yet within that stillness, something keeps moving: the river, the plants, the people. These materials I am working with here, banana fibre and clay, they carry that movement for me.”

Reppandee’s own journey into art-making is marked by an unusual combination of disciplines: an M.Sc. in Chemistry from Visva-Bharati University and a one-year ceramics course at Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan. She has worked as a studio artist at SSVAD and participated in microSPILLS with KNMA and Mizoram University. A recipient of the Tata Trusts Students' Biennale National Award (2025–26), she exhibited at the Students' Biennale, Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2026. She was Artist-in-Residence in Students' Biennale National Residency at Kerala (June–July 2026) and Space Studio, Gujarat (October 2025–January 2026).

Kinnal craft, a traditional art form from Koppal district dating back to the 15th century, was a significant visit during our material-themed residency.

At Santoshkumar Chitragar’s (Santoshkumar Chitragar) studio, the artists-in-residence witnessed the process behind Kinnal’s distinctive wooden toys and religious idols, from figures carved in lightweight Polki Marra wood to those coated with tamarind seed paste, dried, and finished with vibrant colours.

Holding studio 5 as her workspace at Hampi Art Labs, Sabrina Merayo Nuñez (Sabrina Merayo Nuñez) is using her time here to unplug from her usual way of making and let the place work on her instead. At Hampi, the colours, textures, and rhythms of the landscape have her questioning things she thought were already settled, from the formula of her material to the structure of her sculptures. "More than anything, Hampi has become a driving force for new questions rather than a place for definitive answers."

An Argentine multidisciplinary artist and material researcher based in New York, Sabrina works at the meeting point of bio-art, design, and sculpture. Since 2020 she has developed Orifex, a fully organic bioplastic made from algae, collagen, natural oils, and plants, and her installations weave living systems like microorganisms and mushrooms together with sensors, so that light, heat, and human presence shape the material as it evolves. Her work has travelled to Collectible Brussels, Milan Design Week, and the Diriyah Biennale.

At the opening of Red Rocks, Rivers, and Monkeys, curator Yasufumi Nakamori (Yasufumi Nakamori) shared his thoughts, saying, "I wanted the two part exhibition, to go beyond mere representations. I was hoping it would become an immersive environment where, by walking through it, people experience varied ways of thinking about the place, about Hampi and its vicinity."

Artist Atul Bhalla (Atul Bhalla) on his work, "The Weight of Red" mentioned , "it is a denotation and a connotation. A lot of metaphors of red are used within the complexity of the exhibition."

Robert Zhao (Robert Zhao Renhui) reflected on the deeper histories behind his work: "We visited the caves, and in the drawings there are also animals. So I'm responding thousands of years later to the same thing, how we are still living with animals, albeit at a different scale and in a different way."

Our founder Sangita Jindal (Sangita Jindal) highlighted this collaboration and the ensuing exhibhition as a moment of pride. "People who live in cities don't always know how valuable Hampi is. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will all do our best to take Hampi to the world map."

The show is open for visitors from Monday to Saturday, 11am to 5pm.

Last year, artists Atul Bhalla (Atul Bhalla) and Robert Zhao (Robert Zhao Renhui) spent two months over the summer and monsoon seasons in and around Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, immersed in a landscape defined by red rocks, deep green water, lush hills, sacred sites and ruins, surreal terrain, and wildlife, among them monkeys, bears, and birds.

The new works they created there, both moving and still, are a part of 'Red Rocks, Rivers, and Monkeys' that opens today, 5th August at Hampi Art Labs. Curated by Yasufumi Nakamori (Yasufumi Nakamori), the project is presented in collaboration with The Institutum (The Institutum).

It is a privilege to welcome our advisory member Andreas Teoh as a special guest and partner at Red Rocks, Rivers, and Monkeys, opening 5th August at Hampi Art Labs.

Teoh is the Founder and Chairman of The Institutum, the Singapore-based non-profit behind this exhibition. Its collaboration with Hampi Art Labs brought Atul Bhalla and Robert Zhao into residency in Hampi, where they created the new work now on view focusing on the cross-border projects that sit at the heart of The Institutum's mission.

Under his leadership, The Institutum has supported Southeast Asian artists through residencies and projects worldwide, including the publication SEA Contemporary Art. He also serves on the councils of Tate Modern and LA MoCA, and advises several arts organisations internationally.

We are delighted to welcome Ranbir Singh Kaleka (Ranbir Kaleka) as a special guest at Red Rocks, Rivers, and Monkeys, opening 5th August at Hampi Art Labs.

One of India's leading contemporary artists, Kaleka is known for a pioneering practice that brings together painting, video, and installation. Based in New Delhi, Kaleka was among the first Indian artists to animate painted surfaces through experimental film and immersive video, and has exhibited internationally, including at the Venice Biennale, Kunsthalle Vienna, and the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo.
