A city Corporation council meeting here on Friday decided that a mass awareness programme on the total boycott of plastic carry bags will be inaugurated by Cardinal Baselios Cleemis at Gandhi Park on Saturday morning. It will mark the start of the drive for a complete ban on plastics that the civic body intends to implement from January 1.

Mayor K. Chandrika said the first stage of the anti-plastic drive would focus on publicity and ban on plastic carry bags.

The discussion on waste management touched upon the installation of Radio Frequency Identification tags in houses.

Most United Democratic Front (UDF) councillors said it served no purpose. Kesavadasapuram councillor Suresh Kumar said the tags had been installed in only a tiny percentage of houses within the city limits.

Deputy Mayor G. Happykumar said the tags were installed in homes over a year ago to record the attendance of Kudumbasree workers. “Since the Vilappilsala waste-treatment plant was shut down soon after the tags were set up in most houses, they ceased to be functional,” he said.

Works standing committee chairperson V.S. Padmakumar raised the issue of the long-winded process that the elderly had to go through to avail themselves of their pension. “The government’s insistence that an Aadhaar registration is required, plus a bank account, has made it extremely difficult for many to receive their pension,” he said.

Others echoed this statement, saying there were discrepancies in the criteria, and another survey was necessary to ascertain the beneficiaries.

The issue of shortage of ambulances was raised by health standing committee chairperson S. Pushpalatha. Since two ambulances were in the workshop, a resolution was adopted to take back the ones from Government Hospital, Peroorkada (as it had been upgraded to a district hospital), and the Pettah Veterinary Centre.

Short videos made by students on their farming initiatives will be the highlight of the fourth Balakrishi Sastra Congress (Children’s Farm Science Congress) that will be held in the Museum compound here on January 24 and 25.

More than 500 school students are expected to take part in the congress, which encourages children to love farming and gives them exposure to the world of farming. Agri-Friends, a community of farming enthusiasts, is organising the event in association with the Department of Agriculture.

The main theme for this year’s congress is ‘Krishi — Nattarivum Sastravum.’ Teams of students will present various projects based on topics such as ‘Research in agriculture science,’ ‘farm models in schools and at home,’ and so on.

Last date

The last date for registration is January 10.

The Green Touch Krishi Media will present a cash prize of Rs.10,001 and trophy for the best seven-minute video on farming shot by students.

The best child farm scientist will be awarded a cash prize of Rs.11,111 and the best school will get a cash prize of Rs.7,777.

A team of judges comprising agriculture scientists, farm journalists and experts in this field will select eight teams with the best farm projects.

The teams will get the opportunity to present their projects to senior researchers at the College of Agriculture, Thrissur.

At an exhibition to be held as part of the congress, students will get the opportunity to showcase their projects and the agriculture produce from farming activities at school or at home.

Handwritten magazines, journals and study models on agriculture and farming will be displayed at the exhibition, according to the organisers.

The Regional Institute of Ophthalmology (RIO) in Thiruvananthapuram got a shot in the arm for its eye donation efforts on Friday with a mobile cornea retrieval unit being added to its facilities.

The mobile unit, purchased with assistance from the funds of local MP and Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development Shashi Tharoor, was flagged off from the RIO premises on Friday by Mr. Tharoor himself in the presence of K. Muraleedharan, MLA.

On the occasion, Mr. Tharoor, who said he had already pledged his organs for donation, stressed on the need to increase awareness on organ donation. He had been apprised of the RIO’s requirement for a mobile unit and since it was for such a humanitarian effort, there was no hesitation in sanctioning the funds, he added.

RIP Superintendent V. Sahasranamam told The Hindu that the RIO had witnessed a sudden surge in the number of eye donations this year, probably due to rising levels of awareness among the public.

While the average number of donations per year till 2011 was 50 to 60, this year, it had already touched 100, with the last three months in particular witnessing a surge.

The lack of a mobile unit had caused difficulties because on several occasions, there would be simultaneous calls. Now that the institute had a vehicle dedicated to cornea retrieval, the proceedings could be speeded up. The vehicle would also be used for eye donation related activities including camps and public awareness classes apart from ocular trauma (eye injury) services at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, Dr. Sahasranamam said.
