lub – SMRC. Mathews Recreation Club, SMRC is one of the leading professional football clubs in the Trivandrum district. Based in South Kollemcode, Pozhiyoor, a coastal village in the Southernmost tip of Trivandrum. SMRC had a humble beginning with only the local football-loving fishermen community to support them. These poor fishermen had a great enthusiasm for football, and their diligent support found SMRC emerge as one of the most successful football clubs in the coastal belt of Trivandrum. SMRC was registered as an Arts and Sports club in 1953. Now SMRC is a major football club recognized by the Kerala Football Association. In 2006, we won the Trivandrum A- Division and entered the Super League where only 8 top professional teams get qualified from the entire Trivandrum district including teams like SBT, Titanium, Reserve Bank, etc. SMRC had a dream run at the division matches where we came up from D –division to the A- division without losing any of our matches. SMRC was registered as an Arts and Sports club in 1953
Slowly but steadily SMRC grew into a major football club. The SMRC football tournament became to be recognized as one of the most prestigious tournaments organized in the most professional manner. We are proud to say that this football festival has been continuing for 23 years with all the major football clubs in the coastal Trivandrum and Tamil Nadu participating with festive fervor. The tournament is held a prestigious one and over the years, many department teams like Titanium, Kerala Police, and KSEB began to participate. Great Hits…
The SMRC football tournament itself was a great hit with the masses and has popularized football to a great extent. During the Football World Cups SMRC had organized World Cup model Football Carnivals with the teams representing different countries and of course Ronaldos and the Maradonas entertaining the crowd with some amazing skills, shoots, and vibrant goals. The event has become so popular that the Malayalam dailies and the private T.V channels apart from Doordarshan have given good coverage and the Kerala football association members were special invitees. The most spectacular sporting event that SMRC has ever organized is the Sevens One day Football Tournament held on Easter day with the major professional football teams of Kerala and Tamil Nadu participating. Come Easter day and SMRC football ground would sport a festive atmosphere with people from different parts of Trivandrum and Tamil Nadu thronging in to witness this grand football carnival. Mathew’s Recreation club, a pioneering club in Thiruvananthapuram District has been offering one of the most efficient co-curricular activities for our coastal village people. Sports in SMRC have used special significance since there is a sports culture that has developed in our coastal belt over the years when everybody is interested in sports directly or indirectly. On the sole aim of achieving the goal of promoting sports activities and higher education in our central villagers, we have planned to open a sports and education promotion academy under the auspices of SMRC, South Kollemcode.
