After the Treaty of Yandabu in 1826, the British began to reclaim the city of Tezpur. Earlier during the reign of AhomTezpur was an abandoned city. Bengali babus began to flock to Tezpur to assist the British in this reconstruction of Tezpur city.In the year 1827,one or two Bengali family started setting down in Tezpur.Gradually,with the demand of various professional service increasing ,
the flow of Bengalis continued to increase. Mahesh Nazir who came from erstwhile undivided Bengal
organized the first personal Durga Puja in 1863.In 1887, Assamese and Bengalis jointly started the first community Durga Puja. It was then that the theatrical practice began by building a temporary stage at Durga Puja site. This joint effort ended in 1897. Both the communities
decided to celebrate Durgotsav separately. The Tezpur Bengali Amateur Theater Party was formed in 1898. At first its purpose was to do Durgotsav and theater on that occasion. An English name is required to register the organization. Hence the name is Given as Tezpur Bengali Amateur Theater Party. Translated into Bengali asTezpur Bangali Aboitanik Natya Samaj, meaning no money is taken by actors in doing such show.
The auditorium of Natya Samaj was built in 1910-11 by tireless efforts of some people. Soon
it became the center of cultural and theatrical practice in Tezpur. Apart from Bengali Assamese and Hindi dramas were regularly staged here. Assamese cultural stars such as Jyotiprasad Agarwala,Vishnu Prasad Rava, Fani Sharma, Bhupen Hazrika performed in this stage.Many cultural luminaries from as well as outside Bengal have performed here.
Eminent artists have left their mark on this stage. In this Hall in 1925 Mahatma Gandhi has addressed three public meeting to garner support for Non Cooperation movement.
Though religious and cultural practice have been our mainstay, with the passage of time NatyaSamaj has branched into several other area notably, literally pursuit ,social service etc.
Liberal religious and cultural practice and literally pursuit makes society livable. In its 125th year, Natya Samaj pledges to pursue this goal with redouble vigor.
