Pashmina is a thin, soft, warm cloth extracted from the fluff (underarm) of Kashmir (Himalaya) mountain goats, or, as they are called, cashmere goats (one of the species Capra hircus). In the Himalayas at an altitude of about 4500 meters, where these animals live, a very harsh climate, and in these conditions, cashmere goats grow two types of wool: the upper - coarse, thick wool (acne hair) and the bottom - the finest fluff. Each spring this is almost weightless fluff is expelled from the area of the neck and animal stomach. The products from it are characterized by ease, are pleasant to the touch. For comparison: human hair has a thickness of about 50 microns, and a quality thread of pashmina about 13-14 microns.80- 170 grams of the fiber is collected from each goat.
The Pashmina Goat was first discovered by a prominent Muslim scholar, Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani in Ladakh in the 1300s. Earlier, the fiber was also known as pashm. The first mention of Kashmiri woolen shawls were found in the Afghan texts between the 4th century BC and the 10th century AD. However, it was the 15th-century ruler of Kashmir, Zayn-ul-Abidin, who started the Cashmere wool industry in India by introducing weavers from Central Asian countries.
