One of my favourite Leopard images from the Tiger Kingdom of Ranthambhore.

Leopards are a relatively elusive presence in Ranthambhore, living in a landscape dominated by another formidable predator. Here, they are constantly on the lookout, which is perhaps why you’ll often find them perched high in the trees, surveying their surroundings from a safe vantage point.

A couple of years ago, on a hot yet breezy summer afternoon, I came across this gorgeous female near Sultanpur Chowki in Zone 1 of the park. We spent a little time with her before leaving her to go about her afternoon undisturbed.

Sometimes, we forget that these magnificent big cats, whether Tiger, Lion, Leopard, or any of their wild cousins, are still just that: cats.

Spend enough time watching them, and the resemblance to the behaviour of our house cats can be uncanny. The same stretches, the same playful gestures, the same moments of sheer laziness, only magnified by the presence and power of a wild animal.

And there’s something especially refreshing about seeing a big, bold Tiger so completely at ease around tourists that he feels comfortable enough to let his personality show, even at such close quarters.

East Africa is truly a photographer’s dream. I’ve been fortunate enough to explore a variety of ecosystems across the beautiful country of Kenya, each offering something completely unique.

From the vast, endless plains of the Maasai Mara and the lush forests surrounding Lake Nakuru to the breathtaking grandeur of Mount Kilimanjaro, Kenya has an incredible diversity of landscapes and wildlife to offer.

Happy International Elephant Day!

Elephants are some of the most incredible animals on the planet. As a big cat lover, I have to admit that some of the most captivating wildlife encounters I’ve ever had in the wild have been with elephants.

Among them, a few encounters with the late, great Craig, the legendary super tusker of Amboseli, remain particularly unforgettable. There’s something truly humbling about being in the presence of an animal of that scale, strength and character.

The Wincing Act

During my recent visit to Ranthambhore, my home, I was fortunate enough to spend time with Riddhi’s boys, T2505 and T2506, or, as the guides have begun calling them, ‘Shubh’ and ‘Labh’.

They have grown into handsome young males, fierce, confident, and bold. Yet, of late, the brothers have begun spending more time apart than together. It is a quiet indication of what is to come.

Their time within their mother’s home range is drawing to an end. While nothing can ever be certain in the wild, it is quite possible that this past season was the last time they would be seen in the territory they have known as home all their lives. As young adult males, they must now venture out in search of territories of their own. Whether they establish themselves within Ranthambhore’s tourism zones or disappear into the vast, unseen wilderness beyond them, only time will tell.

Photographed here is T2506, on a humid, gloomy morning, the air heavy with the promise of the monsoon. Captured mid-yawn, his expression makes it appear as though he is wincing with every step.

Winter is one of the most beautiful times to be in Ranthambhore. The forest is a mix of dried golden grass and green remnants post monsoon season. The light during early mornings and evenings are blissful. Although Tiger sightings become rarer, if you do manage to get one, it’s going to be gorgeous.

Looking back at this moment from 2020 when my work was recognized in the Young Photographer category. Wildlife and conservation have always needed more voices, more eyes, and more stories, and being part of the Nature inFocus community that uses photography to spark awareness for the natural world has been deeply meaningful.

To have had my perspective shared alongside so many talented photographers was truly humbling.

The summer of 2022 was, without doubt, one of my most unforgettable seasons in Ranthambhore in terms of pure photographic opportunity. It was a special time, when full day safaris were still permitted, allowing us to remain inside the park from sunrise to sunset, completely immersed in the forest’s rhythm.

Every tourism zone was blessed with Tigresses and cubs that season, and the sightings felt nothing short of magical. The forest was alive with stories unfolding at every turn.

In this thread, I’m sharing moments with some of Ranthambhore’s most iconic residents: T120, Shakti with her first litter, T101, T99 with her litter, and the late queen, Arrowhead.

I have only visited Bandhavgarh a handful of times in the decade since I began photographing wildlife, yet it remains one of my favorite forests in India. There is something timeless about its pristine perennial streams, its dense sal canopy, and its mist-laced meadows. The landscape feels almost dreamlike, and that quiet beauty makes every tiger encounter there feel even more special.
