Studio Goppo "Studio Goppo", A studio for research on 19th-century photography, The studio offers artist residenc

‘Studio Goppo’, as we have named it, is an initiative towards developing a space for enhancing the understanding of, primarily, analogue photography. ‘Goppo’ is a Bengali word, means small stories which further defines the purpose behind establishing this studio that is to bring together all those small stories, ideas, practices we carry regarding the world of photography. Although the studio is d

edicated to photographic practices (both theoretical and practical) our approach in developing it would be multidisciplinary. We believe that each and every subject we specialized is interwoven. They get a dynamic, flourishing stance only when there is multidisciplinary outlook. Our studio would enhance and achieve from the collaboration of various opinions, inventions and perceptions. Aims and objectives of Studio Goppo are to re-visit the techniques and practices which prevailed in the early phase of photographic developments. We are also interested in establishing an archive of traditional, local methodology which exists or existed for photographic practices in India. The studio will also highlight on the historical, theoretical and documentary base research works related to photography thus Goppo, as a studio would be enhancing both practical and theoretical experiments in photography. Our studio’s vision is to create a common larger platform were like-minded visionaries could come together generating a flux of further possibilities, opinions, ideas and practice in photography. Infrastructure
700sqare feet space is dedicated as a studio space with a proper darkroom and it can accommodate at list five artists at a time to work with alternative/ historical photographic methods. The studio offers scope to research and experiments theoretically and practically on historical photography and related practice. The studio is equipped with books, journals along with other setups needed to explore numerous processes to explore and experiment with. We are glad to have Neil Chowdhury as an artist resident at studio goppo for two months. He has produced a body of work in the last one and half months using the calotype process, invented and practised during the 1840s. India has a deep connection with this process, and this was the major tool used for photo documentation in 19th-century India.
Neil is the first artist with whom we share the process and we enjoyed observing how this body of work evolved.

Sharing and learning simultaneously. We have never seen our own prints under a microscope with an explanation from the conservation experts. It was exciting to look inside the gold dust pigments of dust on process prints.

Yesterday, we started a new conversation at studio Goppo. A group of young conservators join us to explore the possibility of photography conservation. Conservation and preservation of photography is a rare and much-needed profession to persevere photographic memory, whatever is still left in India. We are delighted to be part of this venture. This will surely open up another side of our practice.

This August, we are offering three exciting workshops on the historical photographic process.
Wet Plate collodion negative with salt print and Color gum bichromate print are the two workshops that bridge contemporary practice with the 19th-century process of image-making.
We are excited to offer another workshop for the first time on the new process of cyanotype. This workshop also includes monochrome gum print to change and add various colours to cyanotype. In this workshop, we will also explore various leaves, flowers and other organic materials that can change/ alter the colour of cyanotype.
