इतुलें करीं देवा ऐकें हें वचन । समूळ अभिमान जाळीं माझा ॥१॥
इतुलें करीं देवा ऐकें हे गोष्टी । सर्व समदृष्टीं तुज देखें ॥२॥
इतुलें करीं देवा विनवितों तुज । संतचरणरज वंदीं माथां ॥ ३॥
इतुलें करीं देवा ऐकें हे मात । हृदयीं पंढरीनाथ दिवसरात्रीं ॥४॥
भलतिया भावें तारीं पंढरीनाथा । तुका म्हणे आतां शरण आलों ॥५॥
Translation
1. My dear Lord Pandurang, please listen to my words and grant me this small request: burn up the pride of my body completely.
2. God, please listen carefully; please grant me the grace to see You everywhere with an equal feeling of love for all.
3. God, at least do this: I beg You to let the dust from the feet of the saints touch my head.
4. Lord of of Pandhari, if nothing else, at least reside in my heart day and night.
5. O Pandharinath, I have now completely surrendered to You. By any means possible, please have mercy on me. Save me.

Translation
Here is an Abhang describing the form in which Saint Tukaram would like to see the Lord Shrihari (who is Krishna or Vithoba).
1. Oh Hari, let my eyes behold that form of Yours in which Your hands are on the waist and there are several necklaces of basil beads in Your neck.
2. Oh Hari, show me that form of Yours in which Your feet are firmly placed on the brick.
3. Show me that beautiful form in which You are wearing a graceful yellow silk cloth on the waist.
4. Oh Lord Vitthal, I keep remembering again and again, You, standing near the Garudkhamb.
(In the famous Vitthal Temple at Pandharpur in India, there is a pillar which is decorated with layers of sheets of Gold and Silver. It is called Garudkhamb. Garuda, or eagle, is the bird on which the Lord Vishnu rides. Hence, the Eagle is waiting in front of The Lord in the temple. Tukaram Maharaj is remembering the form of the Lord standing near this Garudkhamb in Pandharpur temple).
5. Oh Lord! The Master of all, residing in Pandharpur (Pandharinath)! Please come to meet me. I am becoming a skeleton, just waiting for You!
6. Tuka says, please fulfill my desire. Please do not disappoint me.

1. The joyful clanging of cymbals and the chanting of God's Name echo all around. There are loud cries of "Victory, Victory!" in the bliss of union with the Supreme.
2. With flags bearing Garuda emblems in hand, the procession moves forward. Even the greatest Gods like Brahma are filled with boundless joy.
3. In great delight, the devotees of Vishnu fall prostrate on the ground. Each one is more noble than the next, blessed in their devotion.
4. Such is the joy that even hard stones melt and trickle like water. The wicked and greedy lose their malice and become pure-hearted.
5. Tukaram says: The path to Vaikuntha (Heaven) is easy to walk— It is through the stories of RAM and KRISHNA; that is the true way.

What the ABHANG GATHA teaches Us:

Today, the Abhanga Gatha of Sant Tukaram Maharaj has crossed the boundaries of language. With its English translation, his message is no longer limited to Marathi speakers—it has now become accessible to people across the world. This is important, because what Tukaram Maharaj offers is not regional wisdom; it is universal guidance for human life.

At the same time, we must remember one thing. Understanding Tukaram Maharaj is extremely difficult. Speaking about him is also difficult. And yet, once one begins speaking about Tukaram Maharaj, one finds it impossible to stop. His depth keeps unfolding. In fact, not even a Marathi person can claim to have fully understood Tukaram Maharaj.

At the heart of the Abhanga Gatha lies one continuous battle—not with society, not with others, but with one’s own self. It is a fight against ahankār, the ego. The moment we divide the world into “me and mine” versus “others”, suffering begins.

Tukaram Maharaj shows us that ego appears in many forms. There is the ego of money, the ego of knowledge, the ego of caste or social position—jati-cha-garva. But he also points out something very subtle and dangerous—the ego of devotion itself. Even bhakti can turn into pride. And the Gatha repeatedly asks us: How do we dissolve even this?

That is why the Abhanga Gatha is not comforting literature. It is ruthless introspection. If you read it sincerely, it develops a habit—a habit of continuous self-examination.

Tukaram Maharaj tells us that ego is the root of all sorrow. “I” and “mine” create expectations. When expectations are not fulfilled, they result in frustration, disappointment, and sorrow—apeksha ani apekshabhang.

But here comes his most powerful teaching. He does not ask us to escape sorrow. He says, “I have climbed over mountains of sorrow.” For him, sorrow was not something that dragged him down—it became a ladder for spiritual ascent. He crossed sorrow by climbing over it.

He teaches us a remarkable spiritual alchemy: use sorrow as a weapon—to destroy ego. Transform the lead of suffering into the gold of self-knowledge. Sorrow, he says, is the hammer that breaks the illusion of māyā. It becomes a path of inner purification.

When all external supports fall away, when relationships and securities no longer sustain us, a person finally understands God as the true support.

For householders, Tukaram Maharaj gives balanced guidance. He does not ask us to abandon family. He asks us to abandon excess attachment. Live with your family, love them—but do not make them the only source of joy. Be involved, yet unattached—like a lotus leaf in water.

He emphasizes devotion and nāma-smaran, but chanting, he says, is not mechanical repetition. It is a call from the heart—an emotional reaching out to God.

At the same time, honesty stands at the highest place in the Gatha. Tukaram Maharaj fearlessly criticizes fake sadhus, religious impostors, and rich pretenders. Truthfulness and integrity are non-negotiable.

In the later abhangas, we witness a beautiful transformation. The sense of “I” disappears. There is deep peace and complete satisfaction. Everywhere he looks, he sees Vitthala alone. This is the stage of Advaita—oneness.

Finally, the Abhanga Gatha stands as a monumental work of social reform, cultural heritage, and timeless guidance. It does not teach us how to escape life—it teaches us how to live truthfully, meaningfully, and fearlessly.

'Pandharpur Wari' reaches pilgrimage enthusiasts all over the world via a Pilgrimage podcast website 'The Camino Podcast'.

Dave Whitson is a high school teacher from Portland, Oregon, USA. He is also deeply interested in pilgrimage. Most of his experience is centered on pilgrimages in Europe, like the Camino de Santiago. As a result of that, he has created a podcast a number of years ago, called 'The Camino Podcast.' It is very popular all over the world and there are many pilgrimage enthusiasts who regularly listen to Dave's podcasts.

He is currently focused on pilgrimage in India. He was very excited to discover my book on Pandharpur Wari.

कटी पितांबर कास मिरवली । दाखवीं वहिली ऐसी मूर्ती ॥३॥
गरूडपारावरी उभा राहिलासी । आठवें मानसीं तेचिं रूप ॥४॥
झुरोनि पाझंरा होऊं पाहे आतां । येई पंढरीनाथा भेटावया ॥५॥
तुका म्हणे माझी पुरवावी आस । विनंति उदास करूं नये ॥६॥

Translation
Here is an Abhang describing the form in which Saint Tukaram would like to see the Lord Shrihari (who is Krishna or Vithoba).
1. Oh Hari, let my eyes behold that form of Yours in which Your hands are on the waist and there are several necklaces of basil beads in Your neck.
2. Oh Hari, show me that form of Yours in which Your feet are firmly placed on the brick.
3. Show me that beautiful form in which You are wearing a graceful yellow silk cloth on the waist.
4. Oh Lord Vitthal, I keep remembering again and again, You, standing near the Garudkhamb.
(In the famous Vitthal Temple at Pandharpur in India, there is a pillar which is decorated with layers of sheets of Gold and Silver. It is called Garudkhamb. Garuda, or eagle, is the bird on which the Lord Vishnu rides. Hence, the Eagle is waiting in front of The Lord in the temple. Tukaram Maharaj is remembering the form of the Lord standing near this Garudkhamb in Pandharpur temple).
5. Oh Lord! The Master of all, residing in Pandharpur (Pandharinath)! Please come to meet me. I am becoming a skeleton, just waiting for You!
6. Tuka says, please fulfill my desire. Please do not disappoint me.
