Some of our "partners" (we dont want to call them customers) have often approached us with requests to help them support budgetary challenges for their upcoming shows.
One of the ways we have been able to provide a more cost effective quote is by following some good sound engineering practices.
There are many ways one can offer help in such situations. Particularly interesting is working on some simple thumb rules that offer the optimum audio power output. Though there are many more variables in this game, one Rule of Thumb that can be easily applied as a starting point is to check the audience size (number of people) expected to attend the show.
The rough rule of thumb is to have the audio system deliver 1W/person. Going by this, if we are planning a show with 100 persons expected in the audience, we would typically need an audio setup with 100 W (RMS) power output. Ofcourse this is a starting point and more headroom will be needed for catering to other variables like distance of the audience, cable lengths, acoustics of the venue to name a few.
What we have been able to offer is a simpler audio setup based on the above rule, with optimum power and obviously much less cost.
It is surprising how drastically bills can be slashed with this approach. As we see it, event managers who worked with us were happy with our bills and without compromising on quality :)
