SOCIAL DRINKING ETIQUETTES
The social drinking implies consumption of alcoholic or nonalcoholic drinks in a social function. The quantity and manner of consuming a drink by a person in a social gathering reflects on his PERSONALITY. Therefore, a person may consume an alcoholic or a non-alcoholic drink as he likes, but as per the occasion, social norms and the time of the day. However there are some points that need to be borne in mind in this regard :
(a) Whatever, may be the type of drink taken in a social gathering, it should be consumed with social grace. No alcoholic drinks are taken at breakfast time. They also need to be avoided during working lunches.
(b) Consumption of a mildly alcoholic drink, like, beer and wine is considered in order in some of the societies and organizations and during lunch parties. However, that should be avoided, if there is some engagement in the post-lunch time.
(c) At a cocktail party or during a pre-dinner social time, one may take an alcoholic or mildly alcoholic or soft drink, as per the choice. However, the choice should be kept within what is offered by the host.
(d) Drinks should be taken in sips. Never gulp them. Hard alcoholic drinks, like, whiskey, brandy, gin and vodka, are to be taken in small pegs, at a time.
(e) Drinking of two small pegs of alcoholic drinks is considered social. More or less than that is considered socially undesirable. Getting drunk or tipsy is highly unsocial and undesirable.
(f) Consumption of drinks straight from the bottle is considered unsocial. There are different types of glasses used for serving and consuming drinks. They should be used accordingly. Beer is consumed in long beer glasses or mugs. Whisky is taken in whisky glasses. Brandy is taken in goblet type of glasses. Wines are taken in wine glasses.
(g) Juices and soft drinks are not taken in glasses meant for alcoholic drinks. They should be served and consumed in glasses meant for them.
(h) Last, but not the least, as a host, do cater for socially desirable drinks for one's guests. But, never force any drink on anyone. It is the duty of the host to so manage the consumption of drinks that none of the guests get drunk or tipsy.
