Classical Status of Malayalam and the Tamil-Malayalam Relationship

Abstract:
The classical language status accorded to Malayalam raises a number linguistic and historical questions. The concept of classical language itself and the logic of the norms set down by the government for deciding on classical language status is yet to be discussed from the background of the known history of Indian languages and the linguistic and sociolinguistic contact between various speech communities. Viewed from the perspective of Tamil-Malayalam relationship and what is known about the formation and evolution of Malayalam, the classical language status of Malayalam becomes especially problematic. This presentation critically evaluates the concept of classical language, the norms set down by the government for granting classical language status and attempts a broad review of the history of Malayalam from this perspective. It argues that Malayalam lacks the characteristics of a classical language not only based on a universal concept of what is a classical language, but also based on the norms set down by the government.
