Based in Mahalaxmi-Bandora, Shree Naguesh Mahalxmi Prasadik Natya Samaj is a premier and registered theatre Goan group which has recently completed 75 years of its existence and has consistently staged several prize-winning plays in Marathi & Konkani drama competitions and on the occasions of local festivals.
The play ‘Tissue’ is originally written in English by well-known British Playwright and novelist Louise Page. The play is carefully adapted to Indian conditions in Marathi language through a series of improvisations by Dr. Pradeep Vaidya, a hardcore theatre professional from Pune.
The play unfolds the story of a young lady Ritu, who is detected with a lump in her left breast. Various aspects of the very occurrence and consequences of having a malignant breast cancer are dealt with in this play. It involves simple feelings that involves various male and female characters in the world of a young Indian lady. The play travels through various time zones (childhood, adolescence, adulthood) and locations to present various small scenes with each of them forming a part of larger picture. The well-knit play in its unique style has only three actors playing around 15-16 roles. The lady describes emptiness that has encompassed her life after surgery and how she deals with it. The play ends on a positive note wherein even after unilateral mastectomy the lady is later accepted well in the society and leads a happy married life.
The play needs to reach a wider audience to create awareness about breast cancer as every aspect related to it such as terminology, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, surgery are playfully depicted in the drama. The brilliant performances of actors combined with masterly directorial touches, well-coordinated light and music ensures that the production successfully gives a strong message that life is not over post breast cancer.
