A Rare Living Pilgrimage — Join Us Online
(Co-organize by: UTAR Buddhist Research Centre, YBAM, YBBM, BRSM, MBKA)

We warmly invite you to an inspiring online talk, “Retracing Bodhisattva Xuanzang: A Modern Pilgrimage,” featuring Mr Deepak Anand.

Deepak Anand is the first contemporary explorer to retrace the footsteps of Xuanzang across India—walking for months along the ancient paths described by the great master himself, even amid the challenges of the global pandemic. This is more than history; it is a living journey of right effort, resilience, and compassion, connecting the Buddha’s world with our own time.

✨ Join us to hear untold stories, personal reflections, and insights from this extraordinary pilgrimage.

We are honoured that our efforts to revive the legacy of Xuanzang and the sacred footsteps of the Buddha are featured as the cover story in THE WEEK (27 July, Mid-Year Special Edition).
Our project, Retracing Bodhisattva Xuanzang (RBX), is an ongoing labour of love and curiosity. We extend heartfelt thanks to all our patrons and supporters who have stood by the RBX project on this meaningful journey. Your encouragement fuels our pursuit to reconnect with this shared heritage.

Xuanzang's journey in India is reviving the country's forgotten Buddhist heritage. Deepak Anand, a researcher and heritage guide, has retraced the seventh-century Chinese monk's 3,000-kilometre trek across several Indian states, guided by Xuanzang's travelogue, to rediscover and revive long-forgotte...

According to Xuanzang, Buddha spent one of his rainy seasons in Uren. Here is a story about the unfortunate condition of this very sacred site.

More than 1,300 years ago, Chinese monk Xuanzang recorded a hill near present-day Munger where the Buddha spent a monsoon retreat—today, that sacred mound in Uren lies forgotten and encroached. On World Heritage Day, it is time we reclaim this overlooked site not just as an archaeological remnant,...

Participated in the celebration of the 2nd Mahāprajāpatī Gotamī Parinibbāna Day.

Our sincere thanks to Nava Nalanda Mahavihara, Deemed University, Nalanda, for the commemoration of Parinibbāna of Mahāprajāpatī Gotamī (MPG) in the very locality where MPG attained Parinibbāna. As per the Buddhist texts, Mahātherī Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī, along with the courageous 500 Shākyan Therīs, entered Parinibbāna in Vaishalī. According to 7th CE monk scholar Xuanzang, the vicinity of the village Birpur should be the Kśetra (area) of the Parinibbāna of Mahāprajāpatī Gotamī Therī. It is gratifying to witness the beginning of the resuscitation of the ‘Mahāprajāpatī Gotamī Therī Parinibbāna Kśetra’. We thank the Vietnamese Nunnery (Vaishali) and the Buddha World School (Vaishali) for participating. We are grateful to the people of ‘Mahāprajāpatī Gotamī Therī Parinibbāna Kśetra’, i.e. the village Birpur, for taking time out of their busy schedules and welcoming us with enthusiasm and great warmth.
