We have forgotten to appreciate stillness, calmness and slow pace. A dance reel can blow up on Instagram only if it’s super fast in the first 3 seconds. The hook and this spoiled algorithm has decided what we should consume and what we should put out. Bharatanatyam was never meant for a platform like this. It was never about geometrical adavus and dhurithakaalams (fast speeds). The beauty of Thodi (Ragam) can only be felt when you mature in dance. To sustain the Bhava in the slowest ways possible, to enjoy the stillness, to indulge in the raga.
Sometimes Hari sir teaches me to slow down as I chase what’s accepted in contemporary Bharatanatyam. He shows me the beauty of traditional pieces. No one needs to understand, you don’t need validation from Instagram folks. It’s just important that you understand why the art was such initially.
The amazing orchestra made me forget I was dancing on antibiotics and a high fever…

How often do we get to wish someone “Happy 101st Birthday”? It’s such a blessing to be around you Ammuma… We call our spouses better halves because they complete the missing parts in our lives. I miss my grandmother. She loved this song. She’d randomly call me “Painkili”. Sometimes I get to experience her through my husband’s grandmother. Marriage gives you the family we long for.
