Long before sustainability became a way of thinking, Kantha embodied it as a way of life. In the homes of Bengal, cherished saris and worn textiles were layered together and transformed through delicate running stitches into something renewed and enduring.

Believed to have flourished from the 16th century onwards, Kantha evolved from an act of preservation into a rich storytelling tradition, with motifs inspired by nature, memory, and everyday life.

Perhaps that is the beauty of Kantha. It reminds us that what we choose to preserve often becomes the story we pass on.

Did you know? Every Dokra sculpture begins with wax, knowing it will disappear before the work is complete. 

Rooted in a metal-casting tradition dating back to the Indus Valley Civilisation over 4,500 years ago, Dokra continues to be shaped by the skilled hands of Bastar's Karigars. Using the ancient lost-wax technique, beeswax is moulded, encased in clay, and gently melted away, making space for molten metal to take its place. The mould is broken to reveal the final form, ensuring no two pieces are ever the same. 

From animals and deities to scenes of everyday life, each creation carries the memory of a maker's hand and the quiet continuity of a craft that has endured across generations. Through Karigari Ki Kahani, we celebrate this remarkable alchemy of earth, fire, metal, and imagination.

To speak of Chikankari is to speak of Lucknow, of Awadh, and of a legacy shaped by patience, beauty, and quiet mastery.

Nurtured under the patronage of the Nawabs, this delicate embroidery evolved as an expression of the region’s refined cultural sensibilities. What endures today is a craft that carries centuries of memory in every thread.

What may appear effortless is anything but a single piece can take days, sometimes weeks, to complete. With over 36 intricate stitches, each motif is painstakingly brought to life by the skilled hands of Karigars, whose knowledge has been passed down through generations.

Behind every flower, vine, and pattern lies a story of time, devotion, and extraordinary craftsmanship.

Through Karigari Ki Kahani, we honour not only the beauty of Chikankari, but also the people who continue to preserve and reimagine this living legacy, one stitch at a time.
