Celebrating Guru Mayadhar Raut
(6 July 1930 – 22 February 2025)
A pioneer and one of the Founding Fathers and Architects of Odissi Dance, who shaped and structured Odissi Dance. He enriched Odissi with his extensive knowledge of Natya Shastra, gained at Kalakshetra, by introducing Hasta Viniyoga and Sanchari Bhava. These contributions enabled Odissi to gain recognition as one of the major dance traditions of India.
I have known Guruji since my childhood, due to my father, they got associated during the making of my father’s magnum opus, The Man Divine in 1969 when Guruji came to Delhi. Several dancers of our Indian Revival Group started learning Odissi under Guruji. My mother became one of his first disciples along with Aloka Panikar and went on to give several solo recitals including a tour to Russia with Pt. Durgalal in the seventies. Guruji composed the Odissi dances for the characters of Shyama, a courtesan and her Sakhis for my father’s Dance Drama ‘Shyama’ written by Tagore.
I started learning under him as a child at Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra and trained under him for 2 decades, giving memorable solo and group performances under Guruji.
His Dance will live on in the hearts and minds of all who were fortunate enough to learn from him and know him.
Guruji’s memories and legacy, his distinguished style of Odissi and the learnings will remain with us forever and continue to inspire generations.
