To describe this picture, one may employ the phrase 'paper trail', but this is not without caution, nor is the phrase meant to invoke its conventional meaning - instead, it is effective for how astutely it includes the two chief notions that permeate the project: words, and the eventual movement they help manifest. The Reanimated Co**se commenced in the form of a collection of diary entries penned down by a location scout and will release tomorrow as a game set within a dense maze of corridors, staircases, open windows and closed doors. It is in between these two stages - that of its initial writing, and then of its eventual animation - that the most pleasurable, rewarding and excruciating work happened. Over three months spread over this year, a team of close to fifteen individuals worked together to produce around twelve films, hundreds of photographs, twenty five artefacts, fifteen sound clips and a single diary, and this, above all else, is the glorious seance that resurrects a co**se. We are grateful to everyone who worked with us on the project and helped form its remarkable team. Here we go,

The Reanimated Co**se
15.12.2020
-------------------
It is only when Baghdadi locates a necklace with a claw pendant that he discovers that the film - so far the object of his private speculation - was in fact, as ever, a real, actual entity. It is then that he realises that while it does not exist anymore in its material or evidential form, its spirit looms over the city of his present residence, forty years after it was last witnessed. 'After all and before everything', he says to himself, 'there was a film.'
Help Rafique Baghdadi, the location scout, find the film that may or may never have been made.

-------------------
History of Film: The 1930s were an era marked by mythological epics, period titles and historio-religious epics - all of these forms shared an affinity for exterior locations, a grand scale and also, a predilection for the stimuli of stunt-cinema. The phase in time was iconised by the grand orchestrations of Sohrab Modi or the adventure films crafted by J.B.H. Wadia (these would be rendered inert only a few years later with the massive technological and social transformations underway). The middle of the decade saw a release of a spate of films that sound as if from a single franchise: Hunterwali, Chabukwali, Burkhawali and Cyclewali - these, and their spiritual cousins: Wildcat of Bombay, Jhansi ki Rani, and the most significant of them all: Toofani Tarzan.

Baghdadi discovers that the seed of influence germinated with a mysterious film entitled Awadh ki Rani (or was it, Awadh Ki Chandni) made in 1934, and about the first war of independence. But was it ever actually made or merely a product of his drunken imagination?

Help Rafique Baghdadi, the location scout, find the film that may or may never have been made.

-------------------
Aesthetic of Film: In 1931, Ardeshir Irani released Alam Ara, the first talkie in the history of Indian film, and which revolutionised the manner in which films would be shot in the subsequent years. The event yielded a cascade of transformations: the sound recording technology rendered the erstwhile camera more static, dependent on artificial illumination, and therefore, more and more film shoots began to transition from outdoor locations to studio-based settings. The effects of this upheaval were enormous: an era of social-realist dramas ushered in, stunt films waned as a form and major foreign actors known for their daredevilry were rendered out of work. It is at the intersection of this volatile historical swirl that our mysterious film exists, in 1934.

An investigation that begins in a chawl in 1960s Bombay; five detectives, five pathways, fifty two clues, one location scout, a diary that survives him, one silent film actress, and a mysterious film that may never have been made.

'The Reanimated Co**se', a new online multiplayer game conceived and produced by Lightcube, launches for and will stay alive for a day on the 15th of December. The game will play for a total of five iterations (five shows, to match the daily cycle of the ancient single-screen theatre) through the day.
