How We Built a Vertical Garden That Waters Itself

10/09/2026

Unlike many propagations, a ZZ takes its time.

A cutting may spend weeks developing roots before there’s any visible growth above the soil.

That’s also why ZZ propagation can be surprisingly easy to start but slow to finish.

What looks like “nothing is happening” may actually be the most important part of the process.

We’ve been propagating ZZs in different ways for the past year, and we’re documenting what happens over time. Follow along for the next one!

The ZZ Plant has somehow earned the reputation of being indestructible.

And honestly, it is pretty hard to kill, until we start watering it like every other plant in the house.

Once you understand how this plant stores water and grows, its care starts making a lot more sense.

Finally found the real Jade, not one but two.

But the leaves looked like they needed water, but watering didn't change anything.
So we decided to take the plant out of its pot and found the answer underneath.

It's a good reminder that before changing your watering routine, fertilising, or treating the plant, it's sometimes worth checking what's happening below the soil.

Now we're giving this Jade a chance to rebuild its root system. Subscribe to Shall We Grow to see what happens next.

Two years can change a plant completely.

This Madhumalti went from a tiny plant to one that climbed an entire house. But somewhere along the way, its new growth started looking different.

So we went looking beyond the leaves to understand what had changed.

Now we'll have to wait for the next flush to see if we got it right. Follow along & we’ll wait together.

We genuinely didn't expect a plant this small to flower.

And that's what makes plants so interesting, there's often more going on beneath the surface than we can see.

Now that flowering is over, we're giving this little Aglaonema a fresh start and watching what it does next.

Do you remember the first time one of your plants surprised you?

It's always interesting to see how different people garden.

Every space comes with its own constraints, and every gardener finds their own way of dealing with them.

Most “Jade Plants” sold in India are actually Mini Jade (Portulacaria afra).

But the name isn’t the reason they struggle. Both plants have similar care because they're succulents.

The real issue is that many of us care for them like regular houseplants instead of drought-adapted succulents.

And during the monsoon, that difference matters even more.

Are your Mini Jade leaves also dropping this rainy season?

The plant commonly sold as Brahma Kamal in India usually isn't the true Brahma Kamal.

Once you know where each plant naturally grows, everything starts to make sense.

So, do you have a Brahma Kamal or a Night Queen?
