"The simple hearth of the small farm is the true center of our universe." ~
Masanobu Fukuoko

Housed in an apple orchard in the mountain village of Shilaroo, our holistic residency offers fundamental workshops on the ancient practices of yoga, pottery, and farming, along with restful accommodation, farm-fresh vegetarian meals, and ceramic studio facilities. Surrounded by the stillness of the Himalayas, The Project is shaped as an organic space with an aim to develop a community system of dynamic people and practices focusing on the ideas of sustainability, productivity and above all a keen sense of awareness of self and our surroundings.

Months of watching, waiting, and watering come down to these few weeks. There’s nothing quite like the weight of a full basket after a long season. Grateful for simple days, quiet orchards, and heavy branches!

We’ve spent the last month covered in dust, laying tiles, opening up walls, and getting our hands dirty to give the homestay a whole new feel. It’s been a labor of love, but we’re finally down to the last few touches!
Bookings for our mountain farmstay officially reopen next week. We can’t wait to welcome you back to cozy up, enjoy the views, and experience all the cozy updates we’ve made.

Three years ago we planted one grape vine and many doubts, but patience and time bore the sweetest fruits- this probably best describes our entire homesteading experience of farming, failing and finding our way again on mountain homestay

The end of an era?
The numbers across Shimla district tell a heavy story: traditional apple orchards are losing critical winter chilling hours, forcing the historic apple belt higher into the mountains.
Monoculture systems are reaching their limit, leaving degraded soil and uncertain futures behind.

At The Shilaroo Project, we set out to explore what comes next. On our single acre of land, we’ve treated the farm as a living experiment.
Regenerative farming isn’t a romantic hobby—it’s a critical, high-risk transition for mountain ecology.

But regenerative farming comes with hard economic truths-
1. Soil building takes years:
Healing land depleted by years of chemicals requires immense manual labor, organic composting, and time.
2. Yields don’t double overnight:
Transitioning away from quick-fix fertilizers means smaller, slower harvests while the ecosystem balances itself.
3. The pricing disconnect:
Cheap food is subsidized by degraded land. When small farms charge what chemical-free, labor-intensive food actually costs to produce, it faces heavy market resistance.

We aren’t presenting a perfect solution—we’re sharing the real, unvarnished journey of trying to farm responsibly in a changing climate.

In monsoon, Hatu is not just about panoramic views. It’s about being inside a cloud. You are gambling on a clear hour for the view vs. a day of total fog.
Dedicated to Mandodari (Ravana’s wife), the carved wooden temple is the main attraction when visibility is zero.

⚠️ The 7km drive from Narkanda to Hatu Peak is very narrow, steep, and has multiple hair-raising hairpins. Do NOT drive this yourself in the rain. Hire a seasoned local taxi driver from Narkanda market who knows every turn blind.
