Student Project 260 - This particular project took a while to complete but the end result was absolutely worth it. started this way back in Feb this year and then due to pandemic related delays it took him a while to finally get this done.

Made with some lovely live edge sepele from a tree that fell down about some 15 odd years ago not far from Nainital and some kiln dried pine from Russia this particular bookshelf has 12 dado joints (6 of them through and 6 of them stopped). The finish used is a blend of BLO and Beeswax. No screws or nails were used while making this project.

decided to try out his had at all the hand tools in the workshop while working on this his second woodworking project and would like to set up his own hand tool space eventually. He even opted on scraping and planning the surface for polishing instead of sanding and the results were great. Begin a stickler for detail he fitted the joints and refined them to a tolerance of less than 0.4 of a mm or (tested with a feeler guage). And yes he did take care of the grain direction while gluing up so no chance of cracks appearing on this baby.

PS: The chatoyancy on that sepele is something that makes me happy.

The door to the workshop was looking a bit dull. So after nearly 5 years of not having done any maintenance on it I decided to give it a couple of coats of laquer (which was the original finish). Some sanding with 220 grit paper and 2 coats of finish later. It looks as good as new.

I made this door back in 2015 when i was just starting with woodworking. This along with my 20 foot long dining table (A post on that soon) were probably the first 2 projects i did and the ones that actually got me hooked onto woodworking.

The door is quite a hefty thing made from teak and hung using 2 custom smaug shaped hinges made from 6mm mild steel (which i still cannot believe i cut using only a hacksaw and couple of files) and took over a month complete.

The door itself is 7 feet in diameter and that perhaps is my favorite part, an in I don't have to use two separate dimensions (width and height) to communicate the size of the door. :-)

PS: The walls around this look quite shoddy and clearly need to be painted. Its a never ending circle.

PPS: Someone should have told me that angle grinders are really not that expensive. Would have saved me weeks of using the hacksaw. So to anyone else working with metal. Just get an angle grinder its so so much easier.

Mother's second project at Mistri Labs :-) ...

Over the weekend, mom decided to start and finish her second woodworking project. She made this sofa side table for herself.

Made from teak and finished using teak oil and beeswax.

PS: check out the butterfly used to stop the checking.

Sharpening, checking for alignment issues and applying pastewax to all tools today. Something so zen and at the same time boring about it. I guess it needs to be done every so often so might as well do it.

PS: Building a new workbench for the lathe. The one i was using was about 6 inches too high.

PPS: I hate the fact that using Imperial units now comes easier to me than using metric. Must fix this.

So is making 100000 OHP face shields to be distributed to the front line workers fighting covid-19 (They have a fund raiser that you can support). I thought I could use their design to make some here in Nainital.

Problem: I do not own a laser cutter and cutting each of the support pieces form foam board was taking ages on my bandsaw and then i would have to cut the mating OHP sheets to match the support pieces which is quite tedious as requires precision that is not very conducive to a wood shop.

So I rummaged around for some ideas and came up with this. It is made from strips (of different lengths to create a gap between the two for the air to escape) of polycarbonate sheets. And the OHP sheets do not need to be cut in order for them to mate with the support piece hence making it slightly easier for my kind of a workshop. Im still working on refining the design. Suggestions welcome.

Apprentice Apurv (.cricketer) made these lovely saw horses for us. From getting logs milled over at the local bandsaw to planning and getting sqaure 2x4 stock from said milled pieces to finishing 4 saw horses in 2 days.

PS: These saw horses have only 3 feet as opposed to the regular 4 feet as that they can be Stable on uneven surfaces like a tripod.

Project Baby Crib Finally Done.

I've been wanting to build a boat for a long time now. Obviously its a bit impractical to own a boat here as in NainitaI as I would not be able to get a license to use one in the lake here. So when a friend said that she was having a baby i knew exactly what i wanted to build for our future earth mate and decided to make this boat shaped crib.

This was quite a challenging build and was about 2 months in the making. Loads of bending of wood pieces in this one (67 by my count). I based the look of the boat on the boats here in Nainital.

Can't wait for it resident of the crib to arrive now :-)

The boat part weighs about 13.5 kilograms and it does float (I checked) although it is a bit top heavy. The bow to stern length is 53". I used toon and cheed for the whole build but there is a ply board frame around which the whole thing is built. The finish is BLO and Homemade PasteWax.

PS: Need to learn some knots for the rope.

PPS: A boat should have a name and im looking for suggestions. Boaty McBoatface has already been ruled out.
