'Tragedy King' Dilip Kumar was deeply impressed by Sanjeev Kumar's natural and powerful acting on the sets of the 1968 film 'Sangharsh'. He was so astonished by Sanjeev Kumar's talent and perfection that he asked the director - "Who is this old man you have cast?"
Once, after a very intense scene, there was a lunch break. During lunch, Dilip Kumar asked director H.S. Rawail, "Where did you find that old man? He's a great actor." The director laughed out loud and told him that Sanjeev Kumar was only 29 years old and it was all due to his make-up and acting skills.
Sanjeev Kumar played the role of Dwarka Prasad in this film. In one scene, Sanjeev Kumar dies in Dilip Kumar's lap. After performing this scene, Dilip Kumar himself praised him, saying, "This boy is a wonderful actor."
Sanjeev Kumar was known in the industry for his versatility and depth. Dilip Kumar himself was so impressed by Sanjeev Kumar's acting that he would often say in praise, "This Gujarati boy made me sweat.
The film featured a silent high-stakes game of chess between Dilip Kumar and Sanjeev Kumar. Sanjeev Kumar's performance in that scene was so brilliant that not a single retake was required and he made a powerful presence in the scene.
After working with Dilip Kumar, Sanjeev Kumar became one of the greatest actors of Indian cinema.

Everybody remembers Meena Kumari as the Tragedy Queen.

Very few people remember that she had surprisingly simple tastes when it came to food.

No exotic menus.

No starry tantrums.

No “send the chef back” energy.

In fact, one of the most charming stories associated with Meena Kumari is her fondness for the kind of food that would barely qualify as a recipe in most Indian homes.

Basi roti.

Tea.

The sort of thing grandmothers ate without announcing it to the world.

Which somehow feels perfectly on brand.

Because behind all the chiffon, poetry and heartbreak was a woman who never quite looked comfortable with excess.

Reading old accounts of Meena Kumari’s life, one gets the feeling that she was less interested in food than in feeding people.

Less interested in parties than in conversations.

Less interested in luxury than in affection.

A dangerous preference in Bombay.

The city usually rewards the opposite.

What fascinates me is the contrast.

On screen, she inhabited nawabi mansions, kothas, palaces and worlds dripping with elegance.

Off screen, the woman herself seemed remarkably uncomplicated.

A cup of chai.

A simple meal.

A few people she trusted.

That was often enough.

Perhaps that’s why the mythology around Meena Kumari survives.

The tragedy was cinematic.

The habits were ordinary.

And audiences have always been strangely moved by stars who remain human after the spotlight switches off.

The industry gave her the title of Tragedy Queen.

Her food habits suggest she would have been perfectly happy being remembered as something much simpler.

A woman with poetry in her heart and chai beside her plate.
