The Election Commission of India is facing renewed scrutiny after an Indian Express investigation reported that two of the three Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had formally raised objections at least 14 times over 10 months on issues linked to electoral-roll revisions, including the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).

Opposition parties have demanded the resignation or removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, while the BJP has defended the Election Commission and challenged the Opposition to pursue the constitutional process for removal if it has grounds to do so.

The controversy has now also reached the streets.
The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has given Gyanesh Kumar an ultimatum to resign by September 26. If he does not, the group says it will begin a nationwide protest from Mumbai on October 2, Gandhi Jayanti, before taking the agitation to other cities.

CJP has announced a nationwide protest beginning from Mumbai on October 2, Gandhi Jayanti, if Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar does not resign by September 26.

The Cockroach Janta Party has given Kumar a 48-hour deadline, alleging concerns over the electoral process and the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls. The group has also demanded a halt to upcoming elections and a freeze on the SIR exercise.

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke said the protest will begin in Mumbai and subsequently be taken to cities across India.

A 17-year-old Class 12 student lost control of a Honda City on Parsik Hill in Navi Mumbai, sending the car nearly 60 feet down the slope onto the Belapur–Uran railway tracks on Thursday.

The teenager suffered minor head injuries and was rescued from the mangled vehicle. Railway services were disrupted as officials worked to remove the car from the tracks.

Police are investigating the exact circumstances of the crash, while reports say the car may have been borrowed from a friend.

Veteran Actor Mushtaq Khan Dies at 56 After Battle With Liver Cancer

Veteran Hindi film actor Mushtaq Khan, remembered for his performances in films such as Welcome and Aashiqui, has died at the age of 56.

According to reports, Khan had been undergoing treatment at Mumbai’s Nanavati Hospital for around 15 days. He reportedly died on September 24 while receiving treatment for liver cancer.

Mushtaq Khan worked extensively in Hindi cinema and television during a career spanning more than three decades. He appeared in several popular films, including Aashiqui, Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke, Welcome, Jodi No. 1, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi and the Gadar franchise.

Known for his versatile supporting and character roles, Khan became a familiar face among Hindi film audiences. His performances across comedy, drama and other genres earned him recognition over the years.

His death has left the film industry and his fans mourning the loss of a veteran character actor. His last rites are expected to be held on September 25.

The BMC has proposed a 570% hike in entertainment tax for AC cinema halls and multiplexes, taking the tax from ₹60 to ₹400 per ticket/show.

For non-AC cinemas, the proposed tax would rise from ₹45 to ₹200, while tax on concerts and plays could increase from ₹50 to ₹100.

The proposal also includes a 100% tax exemption for Marathi and Gujarati films, plays and concerts.

However, these revised rates are not in effect yet and require approval from the Maharashtra government’s Urban Development Department.

Mumbai has recorded two malaria-related deaths this monsoon, while the city’s total malaria cases have climbed to 9,298 so far this year, according to state health department data.

The 2026 case count has already reached 91.5% of the total 10,163 cases recorded throughout 2025. The two deaths also mark the first malaria fatalities in Mumbai after three consecutive years with no reported deaths.

With mosquito-borne diseases rising during the monsoon, concerns over stagnant water and mosquito-breeding sites remain.
