With deep sorrow, we share the passing of our member, Mr. Manilal Dand.

Manilal was one of the first students to enrol for our first Origami course at the SNDT Adult Education Centre in 1981. It has been a long friendship of 44 years. He was always full of enthusiasm and a great sense of humour always coming up with topical couplets (shayaris) at the slightest provocation. He was THE HANDYMAN for all Wonderfold Exhibitions. Always dressed simply in a white kurta and pyjama, he would travel on a bicycle in and around the streets of Mumbai and collect varieties of papers and mementoes which he generously shared with the group. There was always a smile on his face. He would entertain children with Origami action models wherever he went in India or abroad. This was his ice breaking mantra. Origami Mitra will surely miss him and we sincerely appreciate his contribution to the group. May his soul rest in peace.

This butterfly frame was made out of 242 Origami roses, as a tribute to our member, late Mrs Arnavaz Driver, who loved Origami roses and butterflies. The frame was displayed at our exhibition Wonderfold '22.

It was with a sense of great shock that we received the sad news of Meenakshi Mukerji’s demise. It is difficult to believe that she is no more. Origami Mitra members wish to convey their deepest condolences to her family.

We cherish very fond memories of her visit to Mumbai. She was the guest of honour to our Origami exhibition Wonderfold 2014. She was such a wonderful person, sweet natured, soft spoken, enthusiastic and ever willing to share her models.
Her contribution to the art of Origami is invaluable.

We are very proud of the fact that she was from India and made her mark in the international world of Origami.
She has left a void which cannot be filled but she will live in our hearts forever.
May her soul rest in peace.

Last month, our founder member, Mrs. Gita Kantawala was conferred the Consul-General’s Commendation by Dr. Fukahori Yasukata, Consul-General of Japan in Mumbai.

The Consul-General’s Commendation is awarded to commend individuals and groups who have made significant contribution towards promoting mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and India.

Since founding Origami Mitra in 1981, Mrs. Gita Kantawala along with late Mrs. Indutai Tilak (Co-founder) has organised Origami exhibitions, camps, workshops and other events through Origami Mitra, thus helping spread the appeal of this Japanese art of paperfolding.
