Yesterday, Indian theatre lost one of its brightest lights, Vijaya Mehta.
I consider myself truly fortunate to have received Vijaya Bai's affection, encouragement and blessings throughout my journey in puppetry and ventriloquism. At a time when puppetry was often seen only as children's entertainment, she firmly believed that it was an important performing art that beautifully complemented Indian theatre. Her faith in this art gave me the confidence to continue working towards preserving and promoting it.
One of the proudest moments of my life was when she graciously inaugurated the Indian Centre for Ventriloquism and Puppetry in 2010. Her presence and blessings gave immense strength to our mission of taking this art form to future generations.
In 2016, she attended our show Carry On Entertainment – Ramdas Padhye Live at the National Centre for the Performing Arts. Her appreciation for our performance was deeply encouraging. What touched me even more was the affection with which she encouraged my son, Satyajit, to carry this beautiful tradition forward. Knowing that she believed the next generation would continue this journey meant the world to me.
Thank you, Vijaya Bai, for your warmth, your wisdom, your unwavering belief in puppetry, and your immense contribution to Indian theatre. Your words will continue to inspire not just our family, but generations of artists.
You may no longer be with us, but your blessings and your legacy will always remain in our hearts.

काल भारतीय रंगभूमीने आपल्या एका महान व्यक्तिमत्त्वाला गमावले. विजया मेहता यांना भावपूर्ण श्रद्धांजली.
माझ्या कठपुतळी आणि व्हेंट्रिलोक्विझमच्या प्रवासात विजयाताईंचे प्रेम, आशीर्वाद आणि प्रोत्साहन मला सतत लाभले, हे माझे मोठे भाग्य आहे. कठपुतळी कला ही केवळ मुलांच्या मनोरंजनापुरती मर्यादित नसून भारतीय रंगभूमीला समृद्ध करणारी एक महत्त्वाची कला आहे, हा त्यांचा ठाम विश्वास होता. त्यांच्या या विश्वासामुळे मला या कलेचे जतन आणि संवर्धन करण्याची नवी उमेद मिळाली.
२०१० साली मी स्थापन केलेल्या इंडियन सेंटर फॉर व्हेंट्रिलोक्विझम अँड पपेट्रीचे उद्घाटन त्यांच्या शुभहस्ते झाले, हा माझ्या आयुष्यातील अत्यंत अभिमानाचा आणि अविस्मरणीय क्षण आहे. त्यांच्या आशीर्वादामुळे या कलेच्या प्रसारासाठी अधिक जोमाने कार्य करण्याची प्रेरणा मिळाली.
२०१६ मध्ये नॅशनल सेंटर फॉर द परफॉर्मिंग आर्ट्स येथे झालेल्या Carry On Entertainment – Ramdas Padhye Live या आमच्या कार्यक्रमाला त्या आवर्जून उपस्थित राहिल्या. कार्यक्रमानंतर त्यांनी आमच्या सादरीकरणाचे मनापासून कौतुक केले. त्याहूनही महत्त्वाचे म्हणजे त्यांनी माझा मुलगा सत्यजित याला ही कला पुढे नेण्याचा आशीर्वाद दिला. पुढची पिढी ही परंपरा जपेल, हा त्यांचा विश्वास माझ्यासाठी अनमोल होता.
विजयाबाई, माझ्यावर, माझ्या कुटुंबावर आणि कठपुतळी कलेवर दाखवलेल्या विश्वासासाठी मी सदैव आपला ऋणी राहीन. भारतीय रंगभूमीला दिलेले आपले योगदान आणि आपले विचार पुढील अनेक पिढ्यांना प्रेरणा देत राहतील.
आपण देहाने आपल्यात नसाल, पण आपले आशीर्वाद आणि स्मृती आमच्या हृदयात सदैव जिवंत राहतील.
