The intention of this scene was to give a sense of urgency to Raghav to arrange enough money for buying Opium Permit. The idea was that he is pushed to the wall eventually that because of his greed for better status and money he decides to make a difficult choice, betray his only friend- Vinayak. In the edit though we decided to keep only the relevant parts of this scene as part of the montage. Do you agree with our decision? :)

This was one of the most expensive scenes shot in the film with over 200 extras in detailed period costumes and a location that was setup in the tiniest of detail by the art team from scratch. This scene was supposed to come right after Pandurang proves his worth in his very first meeting with Hastar. This would have been the first time we would have seen Vinayak’s heart softening towards his son as he takes him out for a treat. In the edit though we realised that all the purposes of this scene were already being fullfilled more efficiently by the other scenes present that remained in the final cut, so there was no need to reitirate the same emotions twice by stopping the plot. Hence, this scene after many debates and recutting, was finally taken off for good.

India had just got independence from the Britishers and there were celebrations all around. Unaware of the same, Vinayak takes Pandurang to the market wherei...

This scene was set in a kotha where Vinayak meets a local, Hindu right wing supporting Raja. The idea was to communicate Vinayak’s rising wealth and status through this scene. But again, on the edit we realised we don’t need an entire scene for this, so we ended up only using it like a montage. Short and crisp! By the way, the Raja ji in this scene is the same person who comes for asking donations from Vinayak in Part 3 and informs him that the government has taken over Tumbbad. If you notice, in that scene he is not wearing expensive clothes underlining his falling status and wealth, so much so, that he has come to Vinayak for help, who he mocked once. Thats how we were to know that the tables have turned.

This was when Raghav & Vinayak go to a shop to buy a new bike. Stoked to see the new vehicle, Vinayak not only gives a rupee extra to the seller as a good luck but also the happiness on his face his quite visible. Initially, this scene was included in the film which later turned into a montage because the same information was better suited to be told in a much faster way, making the film fast-paced...
