TARQ is pleased to announce Apnavi Makanji’s (they/them) fourth solo exhibition at the gallery, featuring an all new body of works in graphite, collage, and video. Centred on themes of q***r ecology, this show will be their first after being awarded the prestigious FEMS Prize in 2024. The exhibition is accompanied by an essay by Emilia Terracciano who writes, “Water, Makanji reminds us, joins together histories, geographies, and biological life forms – forms that can be said to feel and remember in ways that are unique and distinct from anthropogenic systems of knowing, thus undoing our assumed superiority. Haunted by past, present, and future destruction, Modern Romance and Other Deaths is a prescient reminder that beautiful and terrifying monsters live inside and amongst us all...”

Debosmita Samanta’s exhibition Bariwali draws deeply from her personal connection to “Bari”—the land-home, a space rich with memories and meaning. Inspired primarily by the women in her family, Debosmita’s paintings tell stories that are both deeply personal and universally resonant. Through her work, she explores the experiences of women who perceive, own, and inhabit this home, reflecting on the profound bond between women and the spaces they call their own. Bariwali serves as a tribute to these lives, capturing the essence of the home as both a physical and emotional landscape.

Galerie ISA presents a solo exhibition by Arthur Lemaitre ‘Could It Just Be An Illusion?’ on view till 21 Dec 2024.

Lemaitre is known for his use of classical drawing and oil painting to illustrate the borders of realism and surrealism, nature and architecture, past and future, terrestrial and celestial, light and shadow. His landscapes are poetic; the organic, uncertain lines and forms of the natural world offer a contrast to the stark linearity and repetition of cityscapes. The confrontation and clash of these two elements creates a strong vibrational energy.

‘Karvat (۔ۭۚ)/The Turn (Morning)’ and ‘Karvat (à€°à€Ÿà€€)/The Turn (Night)’, a pair of 10-foot long stretched linen pieces, which are both paintings and textile works, will be on view as part of the exhibition.

“Chakrabarti’s exhibition, Karvat, derives and extends from Ismat Chughtai’s short story, “Lihaaf”, where two women explore desire in the shadows, comfort, and/or safety of the quilt
The quilt in “Lihaaf”, like in Chakrabarti’s practice over the years, becomes a cover for the bareness of bodies and a site of self- determination and pleasure
She approaches it as a landscape, cloud, or turbulent ocean, painted and sometimes collaged. The body—a face or limb—mostly hers and occasionally a lover’s, slips out from under the vastness of the cover. The body is not at rest, but stretched, curling or twisting in search of comfort. In Karvat (۔ۭۚ)/The Turn (Morning) and Karvat (à€°à€Ÿà€€)/The Turn (Night), used fabric is reappropriated to construct the quilt. The body continues to remain present in its trace through the worn, aged folds, possibly still holding the stench and sweat of its wearer. Under cover, Chakrabarti invariably presents a second, absent-present body, suggesting intimacy and companionship.”
