GET READY FOR THE OSCARS...
The Oscar buzz is getting warmer. Majority of films nominated for the Awards are rushed to release simultaneously across the globe. Itâs more of quality-films rather than the populist franchises. These intellectual films have suddenly found a better (read wider) release plan due to the web explosion. The digital platform is pumped with promotional tools and the moviegoers are fed with stimulating data. Itâs exciting enough for moviegoers to get engaged and eagerly await the release. After THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL, THE IMITATION GAME and THEORY OF EVERYTHING, this week was dedicated to two prominent releases; BIRDMAN and FOXCATCHER.
BIRDMAN is a dark American satire written and directed by Mexican Director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarriitu. He is the first Mexican Director to be nominated for Academy Awards for Best Director and carries an impressive filmography of Amores Perros, Babel and Biutiful. This stylishly handled satire features Micheal Keaton,Zach Galifianakis, Edward Norton, Emma Stone and Naomi Watts. It revolves around the faded American actor who is famous for his superhero role as Birdman in past and now struggles to put together a Broadway with new set of actors. It was the Opening Film at Venice International Film Festival last year and was a limited release in the US in Oct 2014. It was widely released one month after and was received well at the box-office. It was nominated in seven categories in Golden Globe Awards wherein Michael Keaton won his first Golden Globe as the Best Actor. It is nominated in nine categories for Oscars including Best Actor, Best supporting Actor, Best Director and Best Picture. It has received widespread critical acclaim and Metacritic gave the film a score of 88 out of 100, based on 48 reviews indicating âUniversal Acclaimâ.
In India, BIRDMAN is released widely by FOXSTAR in this week. Several Pre-release Screenings were hosted for Celebrities including Hrithik Roshan and was pushed as PR pegs. The visibility across all Cinemas is impressive and the buzz is palpable. The Oscar stories are anyway humongous in Print and digital platforms and BIRDMAN is naturally carried widely. The film is exploited strongly on digital platforms and has a strong excitement around it. The Friday and Saturday showed up great occupancy in cinema halls in all centers and the reviews with four stars in major English dailies pushed it further. With word of mouth, its growing and will continue to do well at the box-office. On Hollywood Recommendation Scale, it stands at 5 out of 5.
Another outstanding fare released in this week is FOXCATCHER. Itâs a biographical crime drama directed by Bennett Miller and stars Steve Carell, Chaning Tatum,Mark Ruffalo and Vanessa Redgrave. Itâs a true story revolving around the eccentric millionaire Coach and his relationship between two wrestler brothers who participated in 1984 Olympics and the tragic events that followed. The Director, Miller won the Best Director Award in 2014 Cannes Film Festival. It is nominated in five categories for this yearâs Oscars and include Steve Carrel as Best Actor, Mark Ruffalo as Best supporting Actor and Bennett Miller as Best Director. It received a limited release in the US in November and was later widely released in December. It was modestly received on box-office and got a strong positive response from critics and reviewers. The performances of Carell, Tatum and Ruffallo were widely praised by the critics. On Metacritic, it scored 81 out of 100, based on 49 reviews indicating Universal acclaim. Mark Schultz, whose character was played by Tatum and on whose book the film is loosely based, initially supported the film, then took U-turn criticizing the Director for exploiting intensely personal subject matter. After release, again he called FOXCATCHER a miracle and apologized to Director. Overall, the film has always something to write about.
FOXCATCHER had a limited release in India by PVR Pictures. It was brilliantly marketed on all verticals and rode exceedingly on the Oscar buzz. The branding and trailer-showcasing in Cinemas is impressive and the visibility is strong. The digital platform is loaded with engaging contests and interesting trivia. In fact, it was trending on Twitter. The Pre-release screening has a strong Celebrity turn-out and was covered in major dailies. The Reviews have been encouraging and so is the occupancy. The Friday and Saturday were good on the box-office and is certain to grow on Sunday. Its an impactful film and stands at 5 out of 5 on Hollywood Recommendation Scale
