TWO PLACES. THAT’S IT.

If you’ve been thinking about trying sculpture, this is your chance to spend an afternoon actually working with clay and leave with a sculpture you made yourself.

Work directly in clay to create an 8-inch portrait figure, guided step by step by sculptor Anshuman. Your finished piece will be single-fired, leaving you with a real ceramic sculpture to take home.

In the final excerpt, Dr Zarir Udwadia places the work in conversation with artists and musicians such as Robert Rauschenberg, Willem de Kooning and John Cage.

Not as a set of references to be followed, but as part of a larger history of artists questioning the boundaries of making, material, chance, restraint and perception.

And perhaps that is where the conversation ultimately belongs — beyond one exhibition, and back into the larger, ongoing conversation about what a work of art can do.

In the second excerpt, Dr Zarir Udwadia turns to the paintings themselves — to restraint, absence, silence, and what can happen when a work chooses not to tell us everything.

Perhaps some paintings ask to be understood.

Others ask us to stay with what we cannot quite explain.

The exhibition may be over, but there are still conversations from it that I want to linger with.

In the first of three excerpts, Zarir Udwadia speaks about me as a teacher — and about the way teaching, looking and making have always been intertwined in my practice.

This is where I would like to begin.

The exhibition is over, but some works stay with you a little longer.

I’d like to take you deeper into a few of the works from Held in the Trace — beginning with Threshold, the largest work in the exhibition.

What you see is only the beginning. The work grew from ideas of memory, absence, time and the traces we leave behind.

In this Reel, I talk about what lies beneath the surface of the work — and why the act of making became as important as the final image.

Some encounters stay with you — not because they are grand, but because of the exchange, the attention, and the generosity of the person you are speaking with.

Grateful to have had this conversation with Sudhir Patwardhan, whose work and thinking have been such an important part of the Indian art landscape.

A moment from the opening of Held in the Trace.

There is something special about seeing the work together —
not as individual pieces, but as a quiet conversation between them.

A few moments from the exhibition,
and from a journey that continues to unfold.

A big, heartfelt thank you. ❤️

I’m feeling truly humbled and deeply grateful for the overwhelming support, warmth and appreciation for my work.

Seeing people spend time with the paintings, respond to them, and share such generous words has made this exhibition incredibly special for me.

Thank you to everyone who came, supported, encouraged, bought a work, or simply took the time to be there.

I’m carrying all of it with me.

There is a strange moment before an exhibition when the work stops belonging entirely to the studio.

Paintings that have lived with me for months are being wrapped, carried, protected and prepared to leave.

It feels exciting. A little unsettling. And very real.

Held in the Trace opens tomorrow, 31 August, at Jehangir Art Gallery, Gallery 4.

I would love for you to come and see the work in person.
